Eternals (2021)
One of the worst of my entire life
Don't waste your time, if you are a marvel fan or are really interested, read a synopsis, or watch it and skip to the visual scenes. The plot is really badly written, nothing makes much sense.
The pacing is truly awful, everything happens randomly and the intensity varies randomly. There is no attachment, no character building, no interesting arc, just a bunch or random scenes one after another.
The story is also awful, full of plot holes, absolutely utterly flawed. There is no verisimilitude, things happen because they were written as so, any explanations that exist just contradict themselves and are ridiculous.
Finally, have disney forgot how to SHOW stuff? Like, do they think we are stupid? Most of the character lines are to explain stuff that you have just seen like 2 seconds before, things that need absolutely no explanation or that could be explained later. And they do explain the SAME STUFF they just explained later. Like, a minute later. This is not a space shuttle where you need to have 3 redundancies for every line, this is a movie!
Just skip this one, it is not worth it. I have watched it for you, I have endured the pain for you. Skip it.

Think about what you are doing with your life
Are you a parasite? Who is the parasite?
This movie is absurdly great, it gets you by the balls and makes you feel everything they planned you too feel. True poetry does this. It guides you to explain exactly what you need to understand, both logically and sentimentally. This was written by a true artist that not only understands the topic at hand but has a deep knowledge about the medium and visual language.
Parasite takes you to another reality, it is raw and yet it hides its rawness through comedy, masticated just enough so you can feel comfortable at first. This is exactly how society is, you are in your home, sitting on a chair or lying in your bed, reading this comment on your thousand dollar computer of phone, full belly, warm, relaxed. The comedy gets you instantly. Light, easy to grasp, easy to follow along. And then, when it hits you, it hits hard, it hits where it matters. The movie prepares you, hints you where it is going to hit, but you are NOT READY. You receive these hints every day, every time. You walk on the streets, you see it, you ignore it. You ignore people, you ignore hunger, poverty, death. Yet, it is all there. Suffering never stops. Never. And yet, you try to be comfortable, you struggle to find behaviors in you that can clear your ego. You protect yourself and hide yourself from reality, consume large amounts of soft sweet warm media, consult with top-notch psychologists, have pets, great food, great internet, great movies, great distractions. This movie is about this, you, us, our distractions. It is a conversation that needs to happen and for this reason I recommend you stop everything now and watch this movie. Thanks.
Battle at Big Rock (2019)
Another really bad piece of cinema
What to say, how can I put this in plain simple words? What is going on with cinema these days man? What happened to story telling, really? This short movie is just really really bad, I don't yet understand if it is bad just because the writers are really weak or the audience requires a really munched down story.
What do I mean? When making movies we usually want information to be conveyed in a realistic way, or at least in a way that is likely to happen in the story universe. This is a little more important in movies than in books for example, because in movies you have more channels to express information than just text. Because of this if the media fails to use all channels to convey information, and focus only on some of them, such as characters lines, actions and such, the entire thing crumbles. It starts to seem forced, unrealistic or unbelievable.
In real life when we communicate, we don't need to express every time obvious things, like, if a couple with children from previous marriages gets together, they usually don't say at every meal "we've been a family for 2 years now". Why? Because they all know that. They've known that for 2 years. Even if they are just saying these things to give context and enrich their characters, to add background information (that is actually not used in the movie), it feels that the information is just thrown there to fill empty space. This information could've be conveyed in MANY other ways, such as using the walls with pictures or a calendar, or even making this camping trip the commemoration event and throwing some decorations around the table. Not a single word was needed.
I know it seems picky to use this phrase as an example, but it is what it is, just an example. Probably not even the best one. But this is a trend that seems to dominate the Jurassic park/world franchise since the third movie (jurassic park 3). Other modern movies are also doing this, they are giving information in a very obvious way, using really cheap and weak narrative techniques. Character actions seem to be all intentional so bad things can happen, characters seem to decide to do unintelligent things just to that an event takes place. This results in people having this felling of the characters having plot armors, since they are "saved" not by their actions but by sheer luck, since their actions are so not intuitive. Character lines are really obvious and used directly to explain things, give direct background, and also are so unfocused and unnatural that people watching have also this feeling that the writers are just trying to fill the space with something.
Just to give a few more examples (with spoilers) of how bad this really is:
Dinossaurs start fighting in front of your trailer filled with your family and children. What would you do?
Would you stand still and watch the fight carelessly and ignore that you have children (even ignoring that you have a baby)?
Would you say to your children "It's ok kids, this is just nature sometimes"?
Or would you hide your family, close all doors and windows, quiet everything down as best as you can while searching for weapons?
Your baby starts crying.
Would you cover its mouth while letting him breathe so that your entire family doesnt die? Or would you start singing musics and telling THE BABY to calm down and that it is ok? If you can't show that in the short, remove the baby from the plot. Write better narratives people!
"The rangers said to just stay calm and wait for it to go away". Really? I mean, really really? I don't know how to comment this. It is just really bad writing. The entire short seems suspended in a really weak background. Who would go camping KNOWING that there are killer dinosaurs lose? They EVEN ASKED THE RANGERS. They know it is a really bad idea, and still they took their entire family. This is just a really bad story so poor in logic that makes me sad.
Also, why the baby that was not even watching but was hearing all of it, just started crying at the exact moment when all dinosaur sounds stop? See? This is what creates a feeling that the events are placed just to the story happens, and not the other way around. The character actions and events that they generate, or even generic events that cause story changes should... cause the story and not be cause of it. The baby cry should feel like the cause of the attack, and not like the reason the writers choose for the attack to happen.
When the trailer turns, why is everyone knocked out? It turned rather slowly and people were able to hold on to it and not smash their heads. Is that just so the baby could stay crying? Also, why would that baby chair stay at the table? Was the chair screwed to the ground? Why? And why the baby was not knocked out? And why the father was waking the mother instead of getting the baby?
Why every car light has lens flares? Clean you camera lenses dudes (haha, this is a joke, they added that digitally just to make the short worse).
Finally, why would the allosaurus give up because of two arrows to the face? It was fighting a huge horned furious dinosaur, it probably got damaged from that fight.
Anyway, just food for thought.
Mr. Holmes (2015)
Great emotional movie
An old Sherlock fighting against age and, this time, his own death. This is a completely different perspective. We see the world not only from his eyes but also against Watson's. Sherlock wants to tell us about his life, struggling to make a case about who he really was, whilst merging what he can actually remember. You can actually feel this and it is agonizing. You want him to remember, you start to get curious. You want him to finish his history. This movie is completely not about the mythic character but a more realistic one that you want to get close to.
Scenes are beautiful if the plot is not enough for you. Incredible scenery, great shots and the color correction is just perfect for the entire mood. Contrast and saturation on some dark sepia tones, and nice shades of color for outside UK... One of those movies you can watch just for the cinematography.
When Nietzsche Wept (2007)
Terrible where it could have been terrific!
This movie is very bad. Lets talk about it.
This is a review meant for those who read the book. The movie is a direct visual 'reading' of the book. The scenes seem disconnected and poor. The acting doesn't reflect the depth of the book characters not even a small percentage. Nietzsche is too radical both compared to the character and the real one. Breuer is to 'violent' in his actions where in the book he seems more soothing. Things happen so fast, seems like the director wanted to fit every single line of the book in the movie. The movie feels like its going at the speed of light.
This is not the quality of review I usually aim for but this movie needed a bashing. And it needed it urgently. The book is too amazing for such a bad movie.
Taare Zameen Par (2007)
I'm crying. This is a master piece.
Here is the deal this time. If you are sensible, you are gonna get crushed. This movie is deep in so many aspects of our society, and at the same time deals with everything in such a cute and delicate way, that one cannot watch this and feel nothing. The movie talks about a boy that has dyslexia and is miss interpreted by everything he cares about. It is touching at the same time it is critic. The entire history is permeated with subtle irony and heavy criticism about the contemporary way of doing things and solving problems. Talks about the objectification of persons in order the achieve our own personal goals... well, there is so much to this movie that I believe I just got lost here. Lets get to the point, this movie is just beautiful. Completely amazing. Who should watch? Everyone. I'm not going to talk about moods in this one since it is so important because of its contents... Just watch it.
Dirty Harry (1971)
Good and dirty
This is a good movie to be introduced to Clint Eastwood! As the other guy's review said, laconic. Clint Eastwood is that, he is laconic bad-ass and an outlaw by nature even if he is a cop. And that is what I really like in his acting, he manage to keep his format without conflicting with the characters he plays. Every time. Its sort like Al Pacino but more rigid, Pacino had his papers here he got more flexible and showed his skills.
Now lets get to if you should watch this movie... A tip for choosing this movie is if you want to watch a police action movie. If you do, then maybe this will fit you. Although this is a police movie, the action scenes are more about showing of power and some suspense than of actual shooting at each other. This is Eastwood style. Like a modern far west movie with eye staring and running around. So if you are like that I do think you should go ahead and try.
Now if you are in the mood of manly man fights and epic phrases you can do this too. The characters in this movie are also very strong, though not deep, they show off their acting by having unique personalities and back stories that are told by they actions. Very nice to watch and learn who they are without the director pointing that to you. So, take a time and watch because you will like.
And for all the others out there, this maybe isn't that action fast paced movie that you watch on the afternoon to feel like a hero or a soldier so you may not like this. But still, you guys should experiment with it when you are not tired and want to try something out.
Unforgiven (1992)
9 because It ended
So yeah, another review by the guy that makes reviews for you, the guy that is searching for a movie to watch! Lets get to it:
I gave 9 to the movie because it has a ending and it was so good by the time it reached the end that I really wanted more. So why should you watch this movie and when? You should watch this movie if you are feeling western! This movie has the western structure well developed: a main group of 'outlaws' that are searching to do good as well as some bastard folk that want just the opposite. That resumes why you should watch this if you came here feeling western... but and the other reasons? This movie has a thing that I love in movies: good characters! All of them have more than just a image, they are deep, they have back stories and they live to them in non obvious ways. The characters show their guts! Finally for the bad, maybe the ending of the movie was too dark for the camera? Or that was something wanted because of the meaning of seeing little. Still, the end could be a bit different with some more loose ends. That would make this a western masterpiece.
Le Cinquième Élément (1997)
Great great movie! Very courageous director.
This is a great example why I dislike most of today's movies. Movies back then (80 ~ 90 and some of 00's) where more courageous, directors weren't afraid of craziness and nonsense. More art could be expressed, more challenging scenes! I miss this! This movie shows this things clearly, actors are very into this whole new universe and the universe itself is well developed. As a Isaac Asimov reader I approve this science fiction. Now lets talk specifics... I always write for you guys to help choosing this movie to watch, so this is why and when I think you should get this one: If you are into Sci-Fi get this movie, no matter what. It has some plot issues like things happening too fast and some weak comedy in scenes that don't need or match the requirements... but still this is a great Sci-Fi. You'll be able to enjoy even the lifestyle of the universe, the clothes, the environment, the mores. Just do it. As for any other, you should watch to experience a movie that doesn't work on the character development or on the people interactions but it develops an entire new universe so you can enjoy thinking of it. It may be your intro to Sci-Fi since it is a light Sci-Fi with easy to understand rules.
Finally for the bads... This movie has some problems. Some times the scenes go too fast and it is somewhat hard to understand why somethings are to be that way. The movie doesn't end well too because of that, for some reason in the end near the climax, things start to solve really fast for idiotic reasons. That doesn't ruin the movie but instead shows how much potential it have if those were to be fixed. It deserves the 7 it has.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Excellent! Beaware of Inst-man-cry.
This is a different one... at least from the kind of movie I'm used to watch in sync with friends. Because the 'action' in the plot is around mystery and complex characters. The movie omits most of the stuff so you do the work, including the emotional work, and that I value greatly in a movie. Movies that make you feel and think, that are not obvious and bogus are the ones you should watch. Directors that don't tell you in each scene exactly the actors are feeling and thinking... no. You need adventures through each history, through realms of thought. Those are the ones you should watch. I don't want to go deep in the movie to avoid spoilers, since I write reviews for guys to decide if they are going to watch. So here is the tip: If you are looking for fun this might not be you guy. You will cry and I don't like that when movie syncing with friends. But if you want to know a history well developed around emotion, and some really funny nice characters, or even some of Morgan freeman then you should do this.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Excellent! More than entertainment!
This was just unexpected! Such an amazing movie! Now why you should watch with your friends...
If you expect a comedy just to laugh then you shouldn't watch. This is more than that, this movie talks about life, about irony and simplicity. Through simple scenes, thoughts, camera takes, and great act you will travel from well developed light comedy to some deep thinking about the way you face stuff.
The movie is about who is the dude way of life and nothing more, so lets get to it.
The dude is a simple guy and was interpreted perfectly, flawlessly. Everything he does you do with him, you feel with him, you think with him. You can see that he is not a simple character, yet you can grasp him entirely. And the most important about his character is that he is believable, real. This put together make you feel you can be him, can feel light as he does. That is what this movie is about, is about you going inside it and taste the ideas. Is about you freeing your mind and absorbing the entire set. And this is also why you shouldn't watch if you just want to laugh.
I really don't have much else to tell you, I would easily spoil it all. This is about the experience not about the opinions and i write reviews for you to decide if you would watch, not to talk about it after the movie. So buckle your belt and ride this train.
Cruising (1980)
The entire movie is dull
Just avoid watching. The plot is problematic. The camera is terrible. The scenes are badly chosen...
Lets do this like the murderer, piece by piece. First it begins like a police movie, somewhat thrilling showing you we have a big problem with a murderer. But then, when you think the movie is going to start presenting it self, BAM! Dull Pacino opens the movie. No expression, no feelings, no nothing. You can't extract nothing from his act from the beginning. First i thought it was a stereotype but then I realized that it wasn't going to change. And that kind of applies to the other actors, they all acted without emotion, slowly making this same void pattern.
Then there is the plot. The history is good, at least the idea is good. Good police movies don't need a complex story, generally deep characters are enough, so this movie had actually potential. But the way the pieces were put together makes you feel dizzy trying to assemble a general idea. The scenes seem random and don't link well together. There is a lot of repetition of ideas and obviousness when is not needed. Ah I just can't. The plot is bad, that's all.
Finally the camera needs glasses and to turn the night vision off. Scenes are too dark most of the film. Even if that was the intention to create the climate of the underground hardcore scary ambient. You just suffer trying to understand what is happening, who is dying, how many people are in the scene... even if you knew it before because the movie actually show it to you =P.
Well, my final consideration is: Watch only if you want to know Pacino entirely or you like random gay cut-scenes, otherwise search more.
Ging chaat goo si (1985)
Really good action scenes!
If you like some beautiful fighting with real moves this is the one for you! Chan directs and acts amazingly here making the entire movie very realistic and believable... well, all fights are actually 'real'. No stuntman, Chan actually got hurt several times making this movie.
There isn't much to talk about here, the entire movie is based on crazy moves. There are tons of bad guys flying every where destroying ridiculous amounts of fake glass. For a police movie there isn't much shooting, but then again you are watching a fighting movie. A good thing here is that you will get to know who is Jackie a lot more, I expected a lot less from him and the action here proved me wrong.... really wrong.
The plot isn't that solid, nor are the characters but that is not why you are searching a Jackie Chan, huh? So go enjoy this old but gold piece, and have some fun with friends while listening to those old guns effects that sound like laser and some incredible real moves.
The Cable Guy (1996)
Great fun!!!!
If you like Jim Carrey and strong emotions this is definitely for you! I rated 10 because few movies made me laugh so hard, be afraid, be really scared, be lost, feel strange stuff, see awesome scenes in such a short period of time. I don't even know how to describe the feelings this movie gets you... Just watch with friends willing to have fun and you have a great time!
Jim Carrey acts so Carrey in this movie even the other actors couldn't resist... so many awesome faces, so much bizarre and yet a great dramatic story.
The plot isn't the best and Ben stiller does absolutely nothing during the movie. He just appears as a lesser supporting actor.
No, seriously, focus on Carrey's acting and you will have a real roller coaster ride of craziness.
