Ruby in Paradise (1993)
Empowering coming of age story
The 1993 film Ruby in Paradise, written and directed by Victor Nuñez, is a coming of age film that delves masterfully into the life of Ruby Lee Gissing, a young woman boldly in the search of freedom and independence from her old life. Ruby, played by Ashley Judd in her breakout role, is finding her way as she navigates relationships, work, and figuring out how to get the best out of life. Taking place in both the on and off seasons of a tourist town on the panhandle of Florida, Nuñez does an outstanding job of creating an elaborate setting and atmosphere that draws the audience in. Ruby's life parallels with the environment around her, as she faces the ups and downs that come with figuring out what she wants out of life. I highly recommend watching this film!
Kiss the Ground (2020)
Groundbreaking and inspirational!
Directed by Rebecca and Josh Tickell, the refreshing and informative documentary Kiss The Ground, is like a breath of fresh air. This film is not like any other environmental documentary I have seen, as it develops a strong sense of optimism throughout the film, rather than hopelessness. The overall positive outlook on the future of our planet is developed throughout the documentary, as they tell the story of what is happening to earth right now, and just how exactly we can fix it. The solution that they present, one that everyone can be a part of, starts from the ground up through soil regeneration. One of my favorite parts of the film was seeing the before and after results of this process. What was once barren and deserted land, is now flourishing with beautiful landscape and vegetation. It gave me a fresh perspective and a new sense of hopefulness for the future of our planet, seeing that this solution is not just an idea, but something that is real, and also working. You can walk away from this film feeling inspired, knowing everyone can be a part of this solution to save our environment.
