Saltburn (2023)
Yawner
It's not often that a movie causes a huge disappointment in me. This is one of those times, however. This movie was predictable, derivative and needlessly gratuitous in places.
There seemed to have been too much of an attempt to create intimacy or tension in some scenes that simply bored and fell flat. It seems that the director still hasn't defined her own style, but shows promise, however.
If I had never seen another movie like this, I might be impressed, but if you are a movie fan with many better movies under your belt I would recommend not wasting time on this. The end reminded me of Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, wherein all the jokes had to be explained because the assumed audience was too young or too stupid. This movie felt it had to explain the plot by apparently revealing some big secret at the end with a collage of replay shots with slight variations.
Sheesh and yawn! I found myself reaching for my phone quite often just to get through the boring bits.
I can't say the acting was bad. It wasn't, and some of the cinematography was quite good. I give it 2 stars because the acting was good.
Dressed to Kill (1980)
Questionable
I have seen a number of DePalma films and I've come to the conclusion that there are 2 kinds of people: those who are fans of DePalma and those who are not. I am still on the fence about it. Some of his movies are really good and some are not very good at all. This movie falls into the latter category. It's fine and dandy to say that his greatest influence was Hitchcock and that many elements in this movie were an homage to him, but it came across more like plagiarism to me and less like an homage; almost a caricature of Hitchcock. It left me wondering why I would want to watch someone copy his style, when I can simply watch a movie the master himself made. Frankly, it's was just embarrassing to watch .After Angie Dickinson's murder, I thought to myself, "Oh great! Michael Caine dresses in drag and kills women". The rest of the movie was simply waiting for that to be revealed in actuality. I don't know if Sir Michael was hard-up for work or what was going on, but the role he was given was ludicrous. His skill as a actor was squashed and it was simply awful to watch. Nancy Allen's acting (if you can call it that) was brutal. She came across as though she was acting in her first school play, and was completely unbelievable to the point that it made you wonder if that was what DePalma wanted from her. Dennis Franz was the only really believable and interesting character in the film and I doubt I could have made it through without his presence. Just because someone latches onto the coattails of a master like Hitchcock, doesn't mean all of his works are that great. It's okay to say that something stinks and this movie is redolent with the aroma of unpleasant bodily waste.
Murderous Minds: Inside Serial Killers (2018)
Okay but with a warning
I have seen many negative reviews about the narrator that I don't entirely agree with. However, I have cringed several times at his pronunciation errors. I do like the fact that the narration is matter-of-fact, since I don't like sensationalized narration. It's a good series, nonetheless. I've learned new things from this series like details from their youth and have seen some new photos. If you're like me and like to crochet while watching television, this is a great way to spend a Sunday. If you can get past the cringe-worthy (in spots) narration it's quite interesting wiith interesting killers.
