Otter Dynasty (WT) (2023)
Game of Thrones-with otters.
This is an Entertaining show about rival families of otters. The matriarchal otters form sophisticated groups and engage in Shakespearean level plotting against each other. Success is bound up in the female otter's ability to command the female l sometime they go on life and episode. At times the charecters seem over the top anthropromorthized, with suggestion of religious rituals and traditions.
Also, the highly dramatic narration gets over the top at times (one longs for someone of David Attenborough level gravity) but it is fun, the photography is excellent, and one does learn a lot about otters. Great program to watch with young kids. I found it very enjoyable.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Burning with Rage Forever (2022)
Well done and sensitive episode
This episode deals with effects of molestation and bullying. The issues of multiple generations being molested was very well handled. Art of the problem is that no one steps in to break the cycle of bullying in part because no one tells anybody what is going on. Paralleling this situation is a problem with us having with Noah being bullied by another child. Noah says the boy is just a boy who's even being bullied by others because nobody likes them. Noah also explains that he himself stepped in to stop himself and another boy from being bullied. In the course of explaining that everybody should be allowed to be who they want to be Noah tells his mother that he is bisexual. For some reason this is horrified a number of viewers they do not think that a 12 year olds can have any sense of their own sexuality, let alone, knowing what the sexuality might be. I wonder how many of them actually have known a 12 year old. I've known several who came out around the same age. Many of them come out as bi because they just aren't sure what their feelings are as they just know they are not traditional. What they seem to overlook is how sensitively well written this episode is. Contrary to the comments of others, I do not feel it the scene comes out of the blue, or is unrelated to the rest of the story. Liv , handles the situation as well, as one hopes, a parent will do, acknowledging his truth praising him for sticking up for himself and others, and thanking him for the confidence. Moreover, and this relates directly to the main story, Noah is helping to break a cycle of bullying by standing up for himself and his friend. Not breaking the cycle of abuse is what causes the host situation in the main plot. He is finding the way out, for himself and his friend. I ve watched this episode several times and find it moving.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Sightless in a Savage Land (2021)
What plot holes (Spoilers).
I found this an excellent episode., and don't understand some of the complaints. The Bots of private life interrupted by the Amber Alert. That's life for a detective. Also I like the occasional reminders that these people have learned vegs outside SVU. It's especially appropriate in an episode revolving around a holiday people spend with loved ones.
There are also complaints that we never know if the foster father is guilty. But the biological father states his ex wife says their daughter is saying her dad killed the only man she ever lived bed, which sounds like he was indeed guilty.
I liked the return of Barba also.
All in all an excellent episode.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: The Burden of Our Choices (2019)
Rather prophetic episode
Rewatching this in the wake of the overturning of Roe v Wade and the subsequent gutting of abortion rights in a large part of the country, and the complaints in some reviews that this was too overdone seem naive. It actually predicts exactly the situation created by allowing different standards in different states (and laws based on the religious views on only certain members of certain faiths) in stead of a basic constitutional standard. Already we have seen the case of a 10 year old rape victim having to be transported out of state to have her pregnancy terminated. A prescient episode that shows the implications of such a situation.
Pepe (1960)
Not very good, but a few shining moments.
This id not a good movie, but it has a few good moments, usually involving song and dance numbers that interrupt the plot (to the relief of the audience) and more cameos than Around the World in 80 days.
Yet I watch it (or at least fast forward through most of it) every tune it's on for one reason -Maurice Chevalier.. it's appropriate that TCM ran this recently as part of a Chevalier marathon because his brief night club performamce is a true joy to behold, especially his rendition of September Song. Well worth the slog through the film.
