Sea Hunt: The Female (1959)
mike nelson and his loose hands and tight swim shorts
These t.v. shows seem to be ahead of their time with the tech. data in regard to the scuba/underwater bits. In this programme it looks like Mike Nelson has a problem with his hands touching the chest/breast of "the Fe-male". The sequence in the cave a little into 2/3 of the show we see him fondle the Female, and look at his swim shorts, BULGING at the seams. I do enjoy this show probably for all the wrong reasons-like-looking at the guest stars and the swimwear/styles back then.To bad it was not in colour, the underwater photography is very good but then again back then Scuba Diving was dangerous and SEX was Safe! It also being an American production, Violence is O.K. but seeing Sex is a BIG Taboo. Or so it is in America still (hung-up on Flesh)!
Lilies of the Field (1963)
you Cannot ruin a classic
This is a Classic that cannot be ruined. Like the other films I reviewed here, it has a personal theme to it. Like (but not comparing it) Satan's Bug and Its a Mad Mad WORLD, the filming location reminds me of growing up in Southern Calif. in the early 1960's. Having a car-Dodge/Desoto/Plymith? station wagon, Mom's 'Family'Bible, sarcasic responses from my brother to our Mother, people who became/have become close friends, this film mirrors so much of our family's past. How can you ruin a film of peoples love of goodness + faith? No matter how many times I see this a tear comes to my eye for its simple message of just showing love to one's neighbour. Yes there is the ugly side of racism, just like in real life, but it doesn't stop the goodness from shinning thru. See it for yourself, its a timeless 90 minutes well spent. Spoiler?-the black and white photography-life is in colour-hey, its a film!
Night of the Demon (1957)
still scares 52 years later
As some have said they saw this when young and left with sleepless nights, so me to. Now later in life I realise that there are such things as demons, devil worshippers, and all sorts of hideous things that we are naive about. Even though the 1950's special effects are that, it doesn't take away from this film. Why were/are movies retitled? Also I have seen many films that have been cut for "other" markets/audiences, Why? It is interesting to me how many American actors made movies outside the U.S.A. in the 1950's,like Gene Evens,Brian Donlevy, Raymon Burr, Forrest Tucker,Borgart, O.Wells, A.Quinn, but that's another story, this is just as good as ever I remember it. The creepy "old" mother, like the one from "cry in the night" or The Birds. My sons after seeing this (with all the DVDs/gory games they see+play)said this really is scary. Then again you must remember we were that paranoid generation who were dead thanks to "science" & the 'BOMB'. It is always great to see the many Bitish actors who pop up in these films (like a cameo of Percy Herbert among those of the cult followers in the farm house). Any time I'm out and about in the countryside or at a seaside village, I 'm looking to see where is the Giant Behemoth or the old bloke whose waiting to push you into a vat of acid or some other vile stuff (cow dung). It is the fact that Americans don't understand or care to understand the way the British are, even though both use a similar language, but now American(ism) is thrust upon us. Still if the American Sientist were open minded like his Indian associate, or the Irishman, giving a balanced view he wouldn't have had such a bad time with Julian Carswell. In the end the police believe Carsewll is a killed by a train. More sceptics! Watch it in a darkened room and enjoy the sounds coming along the hall way in Dana Andrews hotel. Great thrills as only the British can do!
The Satan Bug (1965)
Simple but effective suspense thriller
Seeing this film is just one of a slu that always brings back good mem- ories of my youth/teen days in 60's America. One of the delights of this film is the actors used, like George(Route- 66)Maharis, Dana Andrews (Laura),Richard Basehart(T.V.+ Films), Frank Sutton(Gomer Pyle), Ed Asner,....I could go on. Anne Francis-Forebidden Planet, what more can I say? If you wonder where the outside locations were shot, see the films: Its a Mad Mad World, and or Lillies of the Field. We lived in Ontario, Calif. and going not far out you ran into Mt. Baldy and roads like in these films. The spoiler(?)Why waste a Bio-Weapon on three guys, but then again the henchmen are supposed to be nuts anyway. Music by Jerry Goldsmith, directed by John Sturges who also had with him Robert Surtees, who did The Hallelujah Trail the same year. then you have the story from Mclean.
