The Last of Us: When We Are in Need (2023)
Fantastic episode, true to the game and brilliantly made
This episode was, in my view, the best yet. Not a clicker or bloater in sight, but a critical part of the game retold in a fantastic way.
The portrayal of David as a cult-like monster who has his people under his thumb and doing the unthinkable was very well played out. The appearance of the excellent Troy Baker was a brilliant addition to this episode as well.
The key piece of this episode, though, was the performance of Bella Ramsey, particularly in the closing scenes, was absolutely incredible. The situation of David attacking Ellie, after earlier attempting to groom her, was horrific, and Ramsey's performance got across the horror, the fright, the disgust and the desperation of her situation. Truly remarkable for an actor of their age
And the "Baby girl" at the end. Heartbreaking and poignant in equal measure.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Brilliant, heartwarming and exceptionally moving
This move looks great, is beautifully directed by Stiller and the characters are presented witb tenderness and humanity that is so often miasing from movies these days.
Walter Mitty is a lost soul really, a good and decent man held back by his own imagination and daydreams of who and what he wishes he was.
A quest sends him on a journey of self discovery that is funny, moving and thoroughly enjoyable.
The Walking Dead: Acheron: Part I (2021)
Fantastic start to the final season
This is a great start, fantastic writing, the cinematography and direction are a real step up from recent seasons. The tension and drama of Daryl / Maggie / Negan mixed with the lighter but still compelling Commonwealth sections worked really well.
The stand out for The Walking Dead over the years has been the incredible cast, most of which we haven't seen in too much before - Im from thr UK so I had seen plenty of Andrew Lincoln, Lenny James and David Morrisey. Discovering actors through these characters in this show has been a joy. But....
The benefit of entrusting Negan to a fantastic established superstar like Jeffrey Dean Morgan is more clear now than ever. He is so on point, so engaging and interesting whether he is remorseful, thoughtful Negan, or cruel, evil Negan he steals every episode that affords him the screen time to do so. Epic.
WandaVision (2021)
Unlike anything else I have ever seen
This show is inventive, quirky, dramatic, emotional and exciting. And all without conforming to the TV norms or any particular genre.
The performances are subtle, engaging and executed perfectly and the vision (excuse the pun) of the entire concept is spot on.
If you watch the first one or two episodes and decide it is not for you, I urge you to persevere because it is genuinely wonderful, unique television. Highly recommended for Marvel fans and other fans alike
