I'm trying to take into account that these are high schoolers so they do get some points for some of the cringy moments and poor communication/ miscommunications.
I also appreciate that they have realistic depictions of bullying. And that the characters do engage in and talk about sex. Anime often skips over that anymore, but the reality is teenagers are often sex driven and spend a lot of time thinking and talking about it.
My issue, which honestly isn't really an issue, is that there are so many moments where Mei was awesome, had a backbone, wasn't afraid to stand up for herself.... Until she gets into a relationship. And suddenly she's push over, never gets angry at her boyfriends actions, always feels sorry for him rather than for herself, and let's him get away with things she would not be able to. That was so freaking annoying to watch. The male lead has some serious jealously issues for a guy who had no issue lying to his girlfriend about spending time alone at another girls house and causing rumors to spread. But when the one girl spreads false rumors with no actual basis about Mei, he gets jealous and confronts her and the second male lead.
The second male lead is superior to the main male lead. I will stand by that forever. He proved it time and time again during each episode. Everything her said to the main male lead during their argument/fight was true. And he was still man enough to apologize and try to make up with him.
Overall, it wasn't a bad show. I'm mostly going to chalk it up to it being written in the early 2000's when this was the norm. I mean does anyone remember the first twilight? Cringe. It's still adorable. And still has some good moments.
