Leave It to Beaver: Un-Togetherness (1962)
Out of Character!
There is one part of this story where the writers really drop the ball. Teenage Wally doesn't want to go on vacation with the family because there's a girl he likes in town he doesn't want to leave. After some discussion with his parents it's decided he doesn't have to go on the trip to the lake. On his own, Wally decides the responsible thing is to stay with the Haskell's rather than have the Cleaver house to himself. Huh? Yes! Okay, Wally can be pretty darn responsible so the audience can buy that reasoning. But here's where the script really goes off the beam. Wally tells Eddie his parents and the Beaver are going to be gone for two weeks and asks if he can stay over at his house. Eddie tells him that'll be fine. (To be fair, Eddie DID say he would charge Wally rent) But Wally does not, I repeat, DOES NOT even suggest that he and Wally stay at the Cleaver house themselves. In that situation, how on earth could EDDIE HASKELL not be doing everything in his power to talk Wally into allowing them to have the time of their lives, living like swinging bachelors for two weeks throwing the coolest parties of the year?! Eddie should've been all over that. "It's the chance of a lifetime! We'll look like big shots in front of the ladies. I'm tellin' ya, Sam, we'll have it made!"
My Three Sons: The Heartbeat (1967)
Inexplicable
What a stupid episode! The dad is away on business and Uncle Charlie and the guys go to a basketball game leaving Robbie's new wife at home by herself. Robbie tells her they should be home by 11:00 pm if not sooner. While they're gone Katie is frightened and hears the "heartbeat." It's raining and the wind is blowing. When she goes upstairs the window in the hall is wide open. The curtains are blowing wildly and (did I mention it's raining?) she doesn't close the window! Who wouldn't close it?! She is so scared she calls the stadium and the security guard tells her everyone was out of there by 11:00. Then she calls the dad at his hotel room waking him up. She tells him she is worried about this scary noise she's hearing with no concern at all about the guys being over two-and-half hours late! When the guys finally do get home there is no mention of why they're so late. No explanation at all. She is just concerned about the scary noise. No "What took you guys so long?!" Nothing. Then later, when they're all in bed they hear the noise for themselves. Chip gets up to explore. He goes into the hallway and the window is still wide open with the storm is raging and he doesn't bother to close it! Who would leave it open?! The rain would've been blowing inside the house! Not to mention how cold it would have been! At that point who cares how the story wraps up? Just about as lame as you can get.
