Black Sails (2014)
Entertaining show but ....
I'm having a hard time getting past their perfect teeth and 21st century looks....
Definitely well acted, fun characters, and a decent storyline, but, man the glaring lack of authenticity in certain respects makes it much harder to get into the show fully. No one from that time had those perfect complexions and oh so bright white, perfectly straight teeth, and well proportioned bodies are so damn distracting. Makes the entire show feel like it's people from modern times running awesome having a fun time cursing and imitating folks from the early 1700s. It would be so easy to make them look more authentic, but I guess viewers just want lots of eye candy.

This is why we generally don't listen to movie critics...
When you watch this film, you understand it is great acting, masterful film making, and something quite out of the ordinary, which are all reasons why critics love it. Simultaneously, I imagine most viewers absolutely hate it, as did I. Meandering, depressing and totally boring. I watch movies to be captivated and entertained. Confusing, meandering, irksome characters with all kinds of major emotional issues. I understand subtleties and stories that are told in such a way as to intentionally challenge viewers and keep them guessing (LA Confidential comes to mind), but this movie took this to an unnecessary extreme. It's as if the director was thinking to himself smugly how smart he is while completely outsmarting himself and losing all audience attention and interest in the process. I do love Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, they're both phenomenal talents and have had stellar careers, which is why I watched all the way through but I now realize I would have rather spent those two hours scraping my fingernails on a chalkboard or watching paint dry 😡.
Star Trek: The Tholian Web (1968)
Great episode...
I've been a trekkie since the 70's. I know many people and critics pretty much panned season 3 of TOS. Since they were losing ratings and money along with it, I do agree that generally season 3 was of lesser quality. Nevertheless, there are a few hidden gems in there, and this was one of them. With Kirk MIA, this episode had a completely different vibe, and was rather riveting for its seriousness, unpredictability, sharp tension and verbal sparring. Plus, an alien that actually looked completely alien and weird, rather then humans with cheesy makeup or antenna. Highly recommend this episode....
