Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
Not sure why this movie was so long
I loved the previous Mad Max. The visuals, the lack of obvious CGI and special effects, the music, the characters.
In Furiosa I felt like I am in for another sort of The Hobbit with the overwhelming amount of greenscreen in the beginning.
The characters were okay drawn out but nothing too exciting either.
I was positively surprised by Chris Hemsworth, he actually did create a character and it was believable rather than being another overly whitty depiction of a Marvel character. (There he fits perfectly in my opinion but in most other movies I found him being the same old same old him which made it unbelievable for me).
Overall this movie was absolutely mediocre, it shined when they didn't put much focus on the wanna-be-story and just let the action scenes captivate me. (Again, I loved the first movie because it didn't try so hard to set up a story but just bombarded us with amazing pictures).
In 2 days I will have forgotten about this movie, unfortunately. I was kind of looking forward to a follow-up movie after the last Mad Max.
And I believe the ratings of recent new movies have all, but literally all, been bombed with ridiculously high ratings from I don't know whom to get people into the cinema. That is at least my observation because the credibility of ratings is not there anymore, seeing how just a year ago IMDb used to be like a 99% reliable pool of reviews for my taste.
Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged (2023)
Good but very simple arcade racing game
There's not much variety in the game. The background of the race track doesn't affect the game much since I'm mainly focused on the one-coloured and bland looking plastic tracks. That's nothing bad but just a plain fact and part of the game of course.
The story is annoying because it's super unconnected imo but it can be skipped, the customization of cars is limited and not very exciting.
The game is not bad by any means but during the first race you already see everything there is. Not much is happening in this game overall.
The race modes are fine. Round-based, sprints, time races, elimination and crash derbies exist. Nothing ground braking.
If it would have weapons it might have been more entertaining. I think to remember an older Hot Hweels game where this was possible and I loved it (14 year old me loved it).
So the game is well done but what you see is what you get. Nothing more (and thankfully nothing less).
It's just a bit too boring for my taste since there is not much improvement or change happening.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
A little too much Hollywood
The first movie was a great mix of explaining things and keeping things mysterious.
In this second part there were too many desperate jokes for my liking that maybe weren't even intended as jokes, Zendayas "acting" consists of looking like a 12 year old who didn't get her ice cream which annoyed me very fast (looking like a 12 year old who didn't get entertained better) and Paul as well as his mother were presented much more one-dimensional than in the first one. His mom forgot apparently that she is his mom and straight up turns to her carreer. Or at least that's how it's depicted.
The trailer unfortunately also robbed me of some WOW-moments but that's partly my fault. Even with avoiding trailers usually it was impossible to not see a great scene as it just popped up anywhere and everywhere, sometimes without warning.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Why are they allowed to call this John Wick???
Absolutely not the best of them. Maybe the worst. Painfully unrealistic, everyone wears literally bulletproof smokings and the elite guys were recruited out of gardeners, tax attorneys and university professors judging by their skill to kill with weapons. When in the first movie John shot each enemy a bullet in the head he now often feels the need to use 3 bullets (but sometimes they still stand).
As much as I enjoyed the very first John Wick movie as bored I felt during these extremely long and uninteresting fighting scenes. He is as immortal as Iron Man and with this leaves all excitement.
And it seems as if the directors were mocking the franchise by letting John fall out of the 4th floor, getting run over by cars, falling down literally 222 steps (I know because they mention it) of a staircase and all of it just leads to some short heavy breathing but it's forgotten just 3 seconds later.
None of the characters have personality. Keanus text was probably printed on half a page and mostly consists of 2 syllabus-responses or the name of the person he's just looking at.
I really like and appreciate Keanu as a person and actor. I just wish the director would have taken this movie serious. I wouldn't want to rewatch even 10 minutes of this letdown of a movie. And it makes me strongly think that most of those 9 or 10-star ratings are bought while I am writing this comment on the first opening weekend.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Deeper than I first realized
We really enjoyed the movie. It creates and exciting setting in the first few minutes and keeps entertaining from then on without a break until the last minute.
The actors were all absolutely great, every single one is believable and understandable in their roles. We could sympathize with each one of them which naturally let's us dive even deeper into what's happening.
The story goes very interesting ways and brings in Shyamalan typical parts. So for everyone who doesn't like his movies for certain fantastic parts/reasons will also have difficulty enjoying this movie.
However, if you are open to many kinds of story backgrounds you'll have a good time with this movie!
House of the Dragon (2022)
An okay-fantasy series
Since I read the book I am quite excited for several characters to appear, some of them just on the side at first but man... there will be some stuff happening (if they stick to the book).
First off, I only watched until episode 4 so far but I wanted to write this review early as usually the last 10 minutes of a season brainwash me too much and cloud my general judgment too much as those last 10 minutes almost always are an "amazing" part. And sometimes I find it poor film making if besides this moment I've been bored.
Some people here find the show to fast, others too slow. Well, I guess everyones taste is different.
The thing about giant time jumps is a thing in the book though. It's written like a history book so sometimes in 2 sentences a king or princess is introduced and put aside at the same time. That's how the book works and I can accept it therefore in the show.
If I look neutrally at it I gotta say though that if it wouldn't have GRRMs stamp on it I probably wouldn't continue it with much excitement. It feels to me like a normal fantasy-medieval series. Nice as I like the genre but nothing I would recommend too eagerly.
The graphic brutality is in my opinion less stromg which takes some of the excitement for me. Also much more of the CGI is obvious in this series: cities and creatures mostly. The dragons for me also look less real than in the last moments of GoT.
Overall I feel the quality is quite a bit lower in this series. But to be fair that's how it is usually jn a first season of a new series (but is this series really new?)
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
High rating comes from fans, not because it's a good movie
I would want those movies to be good. And seeing a 8,0 and higher usually means your in for a great, Christopher Nolan Niveau movie. That isn't true for Marvel movies though.
Same old same old, CGI feast, no excitement because, let's be honest, we all know how those movies end. Invincible heroes, it's like watching two of these plastic figures in front of car-sellers bowing and getting up in front of each other. This one has a little twist at least but even that felt like it was necessary since a loooong while, so at least for me it didn't even feel exciting, rather like "pff, I don't care". But well, I am comparing Marvel movies to actually thought through movies. My own mistake, I admit it.
The ratings for these marvel movies mostly comes from Marvel fans, as they don't have anything groundbreaking, twists, wow-moments or anything else exciting (be aware, that's my opinion, not a "fact").
Going into these with my 14 year old sister shows exactly that. She loves all those movies, trying to remember some funny quotes to share with her friends and doesn't care about the repetitive, copy-paste structure of those Marvel stories.
I've watched the first Ironman in the cinema back then, something that was impossible for the main audience nowadays as they weren't even born or needed a diaper change 3 times a day. So I guess I just stop paying for those movies now and rather apply a black and white filter and the likes to the first Ironman if I want to see something "new". Thank good there are still innovative movies out there.
No Time to Die (2021)
Super entertaining and great as always! Don't listen to the sad peeps
People are acting as if the director made Bond jug down some Powerade at the bar and made him wear Adidas joggingpants throughout the movie. It seems like the majority of the people rating the movie below 6 stars should have rather watched the "good old bond" they love so much. Seems to me those same people already did that and were desperately hoping to see the exact same thing again with a new model of Aston Martin. But please not more change! But, oh bad, evil director, did he just make a new movie? How could he!!!
This movie was great from start until the end. The locations are nice as always. The actors were perfect in my eyes and the story was for once not requiring to take notes and draw maps during the movie and I could still follow. It is a great Bond movie with Twists and great action. So if you've read this far and you would like to read a positive review about the movie because your excited for it then I'd highly recommend this movie to you. Don't let your excitement get shut down by the "real James Bond Fans". And to those people: grow up, the world is spinning. And just watch the same old same old.
