Yakuza to kazoku: The Family (2020)
Tragic and beautiful
I thought the movie was wonderful. The second part especially was cinematically breath-taking and really managed to capture the grey sadness of the reality of Yakuza life in a changing world that no longer gave them the respect or position they once had. The mafia/yakuza life is definitely not glorified, and, even though the protagonist doesn't come across so well in the first half of the movie, you really end up empathising with him in the second half. In the end, he is a tragic lost character whose life became a sacrifice to an institution that ceased to exist. You could probably say the same for a lot of his other 'brothers' who also play their roles really well.
I gave the movie a 7. I probably would have rated it even higher if it wasn't for the acting in some parts of the movie, which came across as a little cliched and cringe. Regardless, I would highly recommend this movie.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Dissapointing
I liked the premise, so I was dissapointed with the way the movie went. Im not sure what the main issue was but ultimately it came down to two things. I didnt believe the characters and they were all so horrifically bad that i hated them, especially the protaganist who had no redeeming qualities but still kept being paraded around as though she were some gender-stereotype-breaking hero. Maybe that was the issue... trying to make a feminist point but making a female hero so terrible that everyone wanted her to die. Well, it had some good moments at least. Overall it makes you more angry than anything so wouldnt recomend.
