Suits: Everything's Changed (2019)
Tasha Yar lives!
Suits meets Star Trek. Didn't see that coming. Delighted to see Denise Crosby effectively reprising her role as Sela in The Next Generation. The references are subtle but there are too many for it to be an accident - clothing, jewelry, nautical terms, a boardroom confrontation with "Sela" at the head of the table, even reenactment reminiscent of Q! Love it!
Then there's Harvey. Since season two, I knew this was a superhero show and that Harvey is Superman, as well as Batman, with Mike serving as Robin. I didn't realize until this episode that he's also James T. Kirk.
The big question is, why did they wait for season 9 to lean into it? Why spend two seasons descending into daytime soap territory before bringing it home?
Blue Bloods: Family Matters (2023)
Lost its footing but recovered
There were some rocky moments in the middle for reasons that are not clear; it felt like all the actors received unwelcome news in midst of filming, but who knows? The script was fine, the directing was fine. The actimg suddenly bevame wooden and flat. Nevertheless, the family table scene and most scenes near the end, especially the last scene, were magic. Shawn's contribution to the dinner scene was satisfying. The tension between Frank and the mayor, and between Jack and Erin was just right. If I were to criticize the script, Danny and Baez didn't have room to do their usual entertaining procedural schtick. All in all, a flawed but ultimately rewarding episode.
