Hollington Drive (2021)
I don't understand the bad reviews over here, I loved it
I just finished watching the entire series and I don't understand the bad reviews over here.
The story is a slow burner, so of you are into high suspense like Line of duty, then this one is not for you.
The story really gets under your skin and you can almost litterally feel the sufficating tension in your gut and neck as the storyline progresses.
The acting, also by the young cast, really fits well with the storyline. The awkward and wooden "acting" by the two leading ladies fits stylisticly into the story. These are two top actresses, they and the director knew what they were doing, so the acting is top-notch.
Every single detail, the pristine styling of the wardrobe, hair and houses, screaming that there is something brewing under that calm surface is on point!!
The cinematography is beautiful and enhances the tension of the story very well.
I agree that there were some loose ends and strange plot twists, but all in all this one is worth to watch. Just get into relax mode and undergo the experience.
The Calling (2022)
Interesting concept, disappointing execution
After watching the first two episodes, I was very enthusiastic with the show.
The characters and the storyline had a lot of promise with them, but the whole thing began shaking and tumbling during the third episode. Storylines were rushed and the main character development was at a stand still, and the latter remained during the second storyline.
Both lead characters were a bit one-dimensional, which is a pity because you can almost see the actors struggling with the material.
Avi's character revolves more about his religious one liners and further than that there isn't much more. While Janine is supposed to be the non-spirtual counterpart and a modern strong and independant women, but again this character lacks dimension to be believable. They kind of made her very unlikeable, which obviously wasn't intended to be.
Then the thing that disappoited me the most ws that the two storylines had the exact same otcome. A person is missing, turned out to be dead and in both cases the same kind of character was the guilty party. (If you watched the entire season, you know what I mean) Not to mention that the second storyline had too many things going on (3 storylines) that needed resolving in a very short time.
It really is a pity the show didn't deliver the promise it had in the first two episodes for me. Nevertheless, I wouldn't say it isn't watchable, it is entertaining enough to sit through it. But it could've been so much more....
The Bay (2019)
3 seasons, really?!?
Having a bit of a wet Summer, I've decided to bingewatch The Bay. Well, the first episode of season 1 was intriging. For me, it went downhill very fast after that one. The unbelievable things the main character comes away with is beyond annoying and trumps out any over the top daytime soap opera plotline. The annoying dragging of her private life plotline really kills off the suspense of the main story.
Broadchurch and Unforgotten also peeks into the main character's private life, but the significant difference is that those series are brilliantly written. The storylines and the dialogue in the Bay have the same tone as an average teenage slasher movie, shallow and shouty.
This series has a great cast and from the looks of it, a decent budget. Too bad that the heart of this production, the script, was utterly dissapointing. Then again, it must be me because ITV, the home of the other two brilliant shows I mentioned, gave it the green light three times in a row...
The Serpent (2021)
Looks very promising - After seeing ep.1
This production looks very promising that kicked off with a very strong start. Visually it really looks stunning as if you were really watching footage in the time-frame the scenes are in.
The cast is really strong and the production really has taken a lot of attention in small details. As a Dutch guy, there is one irritating detail, the Dutch couple and the Dutch Ambasador are played by Dutch actors. Although Billy Howle's performance as Herman Knippenberg is technically good, the "Dutch" dialogue that is coming from his mouth is best described as an undetermined language.
Again this is not an attack on Billy Howle's acting skills but merely on the production and director. It is an odd choice to have the details so spot on with the supporting cast and go terribly wrong with one of the key characters. In this case English with a Dutch accent (which Billy Howle really nails) would've been better for the entire cast that portrayed a Dutch character.
Nevertheless, I will look forward for the upcoming episodes.
