The Moods of Surfing (1968)
Growing up @ the Beach in the 70's
Honestly, one of the most iconic vintage surf movies ever. If you liked "The Endless Summer", you'll love " The Moods of Surfing".
As a teenager my woodshop teacher in Newport 1977, would show this movie as it was an approved movie to show by the district and teachers had to reserve it. In those days, movies were really movies shown on 16mm film. In fact, he along with other teachers would show this movie on the last day of school before summer vacation and I really couldn't wait for summer to start after seeing " The Moods of Surfing". Greg MacGillivray, the film maker, went to Newport Harbor High School when he made this movie so the impact of big swells showcased really hit home as a local. Fast forward, I became a P.E. teacher and followed in the footsteps of former teachers who also showed " The Moods of Surfing" to my students the last week of school to kick off summer. This movie will leave you feeling like June is here and summer is ready to start in Newport Beach or Hawai'i, so wax up you board.
