Confusing
19 April 2024
I had not read any of the Dune books so the only guide I had to the story and characters was the first film. I thought Dune was OK-ish but nothing special, it didn't grab me at all. I hadn't intended to see Dune II but did so after reading the many good reviews. I'm afraid my take on this one was pretty much the same as that on the first. At times it looked like whole scenes had been missed out, as though they were being saved for an extended-edition DVD, and so it was very difficult for me to follow the story as there seemed to be no continuity and no rationale for what was actually taking place on screen. Will I be going to see Dune III, as inevitably there will be one, probably not. Rated 6 purely for the special effects.

OK-ish
28 March 2022
Somewhere in there is a good film trying to get out, sadly completely ruined by Michael Bay's usual frenetic direction and the over-the-top acting of Jake Gyllenhall. The film is saved from being a complete disaster by the measured, and believeable, acting of Eiza Gonzalez who, for my money, is head and shoulders above the rest and is the star.

Gentle and charming

This is a gentle, charming and engaging film about loss, redemption and finding love in the most unexpected place, together with the wonderful secenery of the Finnish countryside. Highly recommended.

Should have been better
15 February 2022
If this was a video game adaptation, then that probably explains why there was so little exposition of the back stories of the characters, apart from Nate. While watching this I couldn't shake the feeling that it should have been much better-the main problem being the usual wooden, expressionless "acting" of Mark Wahlberg. I'm sure a more expressive actor would have made much more of the role of Sully, and made it a better picture. A reasonable way to spend a couple of hours out of the cold and rain, but could, maybe should, have been much better.

Not worth your time.
4 February 2022
A remarkable cast of good actors was assembled for this film. Unfortunately, although they all tried mighty hard, they were let down by this over-long, rambling, highly unrealistic tale of what might have happened "somewhere in the pacific" in the Second World War.

It's not really a war film but more a study of human nature, but with a really poor script.

Don't waste your time.

Hmmm
26 October 2021
Not having seen the earlier film, nor read any of the books, it took me the first couple of hours to work out what was happening and who was who. This was not helped by the picture being so dark that much of the detail was lost, and the over-loud sound made it difficult to concentrate on what was actually happening on screen, buit this might have been the fault of the particular theatre I happened to be in. However, I thought the final half-hour was pretty good so will very likely watch Part II when it appears, if only to find out what happens to Paul and his mom. 6/10 is my score.

Hilarious
15 June 2021
Hilarious, laught out loud comedy, the most entertaining film i have seen for ages. Go and see it.

It helps with the back story if you have seen the first film but it's not neccessary as this one stands on it's own.

Disappointing
15 June 2021
I really wanted to like this, but, a wooden, expressionless leading man and cartoon villains meant that it was hugely disappointing. Don't waste your money on this.

Not a comedy
19 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm most likely in a minority here, but I really cannot understand why this is being portrayed as a comedy. It portrays a totally sterile marriage where the husband and wife have no connection whatsoever and just stay together out of habit. The husband is unable to recognize or meet his wife's emotional, or other, needs while the wife is equally unable to make those needs plain to her husband, meanwhile their two live-at-home sons seem to have no respect whatsoever for either of them. Meanwhile, the wife is being pursued relentlessy by a handsome stranger who wants nothing more than an affair with her-while wanting to indulge, she is afraid to take the step as it would undoubtedly signal the end of her marriage, so she remains eternally dissatisfied with life.

It's a bleak view of what many marriages become, without a single comedy moment in it. The only redeeming feature is that it is the fist time that we see Nicholas Lyndhurst in a long-running serial-he's later to become well known as the immortal Rodney in Only Fools and Horses-now THAT'S a comedy!.

Shaun the Sheep (2007–2020)

The best show on TV
11 December 2009
I only discovered Shaun the Sheep last week and have recorded and watched every episode since then-it is shown twice every day on BBC in back to back episodes. It is just the most wonderfully entertaining show. It is beautifully written, the acting (!) is excellent and the attention to detail and the sheer observation is beyond belief. There is so much going on in each scene that you really have to concentrate all the time or you miss something!. It is only show on TV at the moment (and I include terrestrial and satellite in that) which gives me so many laugh out loud moments. I don't know whether or not it appeals to children but it certainly appeals to me- and I am 65 years old!. I echo another comment and should love to see a full-length film, or at least a version extended more that it's usual 5 minutes. Brilliant!.

A real fun movie
3 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Come on everybody, what's wrong with all of you out there!.Don't take things so seriously.I LOVED this film.It isn't supposed to be a video lesson in Mexican geography,it's supposed to be a fun, lighthearted movie.True,it's no Gone With the Wind but it does what it sets out to do.My usual type of movie is the vampire or zombie genre-you get the picture-but occasionally I like to take in a lightweight movie, such as this one;in fact, one of my all-time favourites is Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion.I have to admit to being a dog-lover,but some of the scenes were simply hilarious. The way that Chloe and Delgado were rescued in the mountain lion scene had me laughing out loud and applauding-it was so funny and unexpected. So,anyone going to see this movie, please ignore all of the negative comment you have read and just go with an open mind.I am sure you will enjoy it.The only slight downside is the performance of Piper Perabo,I just don't GET her, just the same as she was in Coyote Ugly.Still, she was OK in Imagine Me and You. Anyway, she probably doesn't GET me either, so that's OK.

A simple tale of the eternal triangle.
14 November 2006
This film is basically a very simple tale based on the old eternal triangle set against an action background and should not in any way be judged as what I call a Hong Kong Action movie. What action sequences there are in it very much support the story rather than being the central theme of the film. If you watch the film on this basis and submerge yourself in it you will see one of the most beautifully shot films there has ever been-in my humble opinion. Any film which has actors of the undoubted calibre of Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau in it must be worthy of anyone's time and to have the ravishing Ziyi Zhang in it as well makes it a must see. In fact anything she appears in is a must see for me!. Zhang Yimou's Direction shows it's usual sure touch, although, if I have one small criticism, it is the Tea House dance scene which, although it shows Ms Zhang's classical Chinese ballet training to perfection, does go on for a little too long. Don't let that put you off, go and see this beautiful film
