Jehovah's Witnesses Stand Firm Against Nazi Assault (1996)
Standing Firm A;always Good
Anytime any one (Shindler or any one) stands against the Nazis then it's a good thing. The more standing against Hitler and the killing factories, the better. The beliefs of the people here is not important just like I don't even know or care what religion Schindler was. The important thing is that anyone with the courage to stand against the Nazi's is noteworthy. Let us all honor anyone who endured and anyone who stood up against the Nazi monsters. What would have happened to Hitler if the German's on religious grounds, refused to go along with him? What if even the soldiers said, I am willing to fight for my country, but this Holocaust stuff is sick and I want no part of it?
McLibel (2005)
Mc Good Documentary
I saw this movie the other day and it was very good. Keep in mind that the two won in court (in which McDonald's was fined). The charges against McDonalds was supported by footage of cows and chickens in slaughterhouses, and workers at McDonalds. Everone should see it.
McDonald's hired the best lawyers money can buy and had a fair chance in defending itself, but lost. Nobody gagged McDonalds not with its billions of dollars in advertising and PR. So it's hard to feel that anyone was unfair to McDonalds. We need more of this kind of documentary because as it was stated, it is unlikely we would see this as a commercial television special because commercial television depends on McDonald's advertising revenue.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)
Star Trek voyage home hits home
I believe that while they have written intelligently, some people have misunderstood "Star Trek the Voyage Home". It was not simply for laughs.
The real villian in this movie is the greed and coldness of the 80's. This is shown as Man wipes out a valuable species amdScotty runs into a greedy personwho nearly drools at the formula for a metal.
The film attacks the crudeness of the 80's when Kirk tells Spock that to pass for humans of the day, they must curse and "no one pays attention to you unless you curse every other word." MyCoy says about the people "I don't know how these people ever made it to our time."
While the second movie had Khan as a villian, this one had man's greed. It became funny at times because it had the star trek belief that what we consider modern today will be laughable tommorrow just as the early hand cranked cars look silly to us. That was a point made in the television series and this movie.
The movie might be appreciated more if one considers what it was saying. Just as "Dr Strangelove" was funny with a deadly serious topic and showed how insane the world had become, so did this 'Star Trek"
Gone with the Wind (1939)
THIS MOVIE SHOULD GO WITH THE WIND
Someone pointed out flaws in this film, but there are more. Also someone downplayed or white-washed the racism in Gone With the Wind. In the first place happy slaves is a stupid idea. Slaves had no rights. No rights to education, voting or any freedom. Someone else decided who and when they were to "marry" or produce other slaves. They were bred and treated like cattle. They were legally beaten and murdered for no reason. Slave women were regularly raped by white owners. And where is Mammy's husband and children? Sold and ripped away from her at an auction block. All this and slaves are supposed to be happy. Secondly, how can we care about the likes of Scarlett, someone who profits from the death and suffering of enslaved people like a drug pusher? Slavery or having no rights at all does not produce happiness. There are reports of house slaves committing suicide or killing their children rather than have them subjected to slavery, and a famous one, Harriet Tubman, describes how degrading it is before she escapes.
Some viewers are caught up in the romance and music without stopping to note how the film white washes slavery and despicable people. How about happy smiling concentration camp victims and wonderful, beautiful and romantic sadistic nazi prison guards?
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
A SCI FI CLASSIC MASTERPIECE
What if everyone you know: your family, friends, teachers, were suddenly not themselves? What if you found out they were alien plant people bent on taking over and not only is there nothing you can do about it, there is a 99 percent chance you will also become a strange plant creature?
If this is not chilling, then you are a body snatching plant creature, as they have no emotion. Emotion, feelings of love and hate, the need for sex are all gone and you are something else when your body is snatched.
The original "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" is a great classic in which indiviual thinking and acting are taken from you and your closest friends become enemies.
If you haven't seen this film before, then I am sorry because not knowing what was to come next was what shocked audiences. It's best if you see the original, not knowing too much to come, and then see the 78 remake that has much of the same dialog and characters, but only updated for the 70's fears and concerns of the time.
Dances with Wolves (1990)
ONE OF THE GREATEST
Dances is one of the greatest westerns of all time. Some racists and others may feel uncomfortable with this more realistic and adult version of the west, but it needs to be told. Some claim that the movie makes whites looks bad. Anyone who saw the film knows this isn't true. First there is Dunbar, then a Union soldier only doing his duty, then a white woman and other good whites who do not harm anyone. What some really object to is not showing American Indians as all unhuman beasts. There is a tribe of Mohawks who scalp, but there is also kind good Indians as there are and was in real life. (You should read the lying racist "Detroit News" article on this film)This is a great movie. Give it all the stars. Whites feel bad when they realize they murdered peaceful people as did the Nazis. But the rich colors of the burnt red hills, the beautiful score, give a view of a romantic, sad, but real American West.
Marty (1955)
MARTY MIGHTY MARVELOUS
I have just saw this film again on television and I haven't seen it in quite a while. I agree with all the aplauding comments made here. The movie is a simple classic and there have always been men and women like the characters in this film, and now that I think about it, there are many teenaged or young Marty's today. The movie will never go out of style ,I think, as there are millions of classifieds and dating services today for people to meet people. The film also makes a comment that the beauty inside is more important than the beauty outside. I can't think of anything to criticize about this movie, but a lot of things to praise it.
The Lost Weekend (1945)
Only One Flaw
Finally got a chance to completely see this movie. It is great. It is realistic as it shows all the symptoms of alcholism. If you are not a alcoholic then you are likely to have one in your family or to see it in someone else's. For these reasons "Lost Weekend" is not dated and should be given a lot of credit for its realism not not white washing the character or the problem. Thank God the drunk does not drive. There is only one flaw in the movie though and this is its ending. The gutless guy suddenly gets the strength to stop and this is totally unrealistic based on all that occurred previously in the movie. A better ending was in "Days of Wine and Roses" in which the drunk finally went to AA. Nevertheless, "Lost Weekend" is not only great but a classic.
Shane (1953)
A lot of symbolism
Shane was a classic. A lot of people think the character was unrealistic. What I always thought about this was that in the early west people (and the homesteaders in the film )had to rely on their neighbors to survive. Shane represents this idea. Although he is necessary, his time is passing as the West is changing. The kid thinks the gunslinging is cool, but adults know the time for shootouts and taking the law into your hands is going out with the new century. Shane's quick draw skill has no place in the new century and it's good riddance to people like the villian who slaughters people for land. The Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy had similar themes. But Shane is not a brainless shoot em up and makes many points.
Okay, the kid (Brandon D.) was annoying throughout the film and if the character was supposed to be annoying (and it seems he was) then maybe he did his job and the award was justified.
Field of Dreams (1989)
No Awards?
I recently saw "Field of Dreams." There is one thing I find hard to belive: that the movie did not recieve any Academy Awards. This is one of those movies that seems to be made specifically to win awards. It should have gotten at least something besides the nominations alone. I can't remember seeing James Earl Jones act so well or saw such an uplifting, great script. It's one of those films that you will want to see again and again, a classic. I ran across chat comments saying that this is a "guy film" that women may not or won't understand. Maybe so. It's a lot about what men feel and go through, I think. This is one I can proudly recommend. This is one a lot of people can recommend.
The Green Hornet (1966)
Stupid ABC and 20th Century Fox
You would have to add ABC and 20th Century Fox to the list of the most stupid business people. They did not know what they had when they had "The Green Hornet." A movie with Bruce Lee would be bigger than Batman, but they did not make it. Lee was very popular in more than one county and a movie with Kato and the Hornet against a group of super villans would still be watched and making tons of money today. They could get someone else, but that would be like replacing Tiger Woods or Ali and it could never be as popular without Bruce Lee. Why did they not see the goldmine they had? If they had the brains, we would have a lot of great Bruce Lee and Hornet films to watch.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Better After Time
Yes, I know that Star Trek the motion picture seemed like it focused more on the special effects than the human interaction. When I first saw it I felt that way a little ,that it wasn't enough like the series. Recently though, I saw it on television and apprecitated it a lot more-- to the point of believing it was more like the series and better than The Wrath of Khan. It seemed more aimed at thinking adults than the cowboy and Indians ray gun
stuff which is more for kids.
Ride the High Country (1962)
What Westerns Should Be
"Ride the High Country" might be a Western for those who don't usually watch Westerns. What I mean is that it is not a brainless shoot em up with a racist and inaccurate look at Indians, but an intelligent, well made film. It is also realistic. We can belive that there were evil people and we can just as easily belive that there were some good, but not perfect, men. I suspect that the popularity of Westerns never went, they just stopped making really good ones like "Ride the High Country." "Ride the High Country" should not be confused with the bad westerns as it goes way beyond them. Anyone who likes a good western and even those who don't should see "Ride the High Country"
The Godfather Part II (1974)
An important film
There is one thing I feel sure about: the people who dislike "The Godfather part 2" or say "Goodfellas" is better, didn't understand the movie. The Godfather movies, like the book, are not to be taken as typical gangster stories or gangster stories at all. The first movie was how capitalism, the Catholic Church, big business and the goverment are all the same as organized crime. The second movie with a Marxist theme, is an expansion of that idea and tells how destructive capitalism is to three different types of Families. The movie did not intend to totally portray how the mafia works, but goes beyond that. With this in mind, The Godfather is a great movie and the violence is used to make a point.
Furthermore, if you do a little research, you will find out everything I said about the movie is true.
Airport (1970)
AIRPORT A CLASSIC
Airport is a movie that once it begins grabs your interest to the end. I cannot say it is dated because people do not change and neither does crisis onboard airplanes. So it is a classic that we can enjoy today about as much as 1970's audiences did. As for "Aiplane," everyone has their own idea of what is funny and what is not. Rape, torture, and child abuse is hilarious to some people, so its depends on your taste. Remember that when someone says "Airplane" and other movies are funny. But "Airport" the movie which caused many sequels, other diaster movies and spoofs to be made, was the great original that you should rent or buy. See the movie that started it all.
