Roadfood: Chicago, IL (2021)
Messy BBQ is the best BBQ
Chicago isn't high on my list of must-go places in the USA but because of this episode, it just went way up. I'll probably eat my way through all these BBQ places once travel isn't so difficult anymore.
The conversations with the African-American locals were so illuminating and sobering, and it all gets topped off with good music. Perfect.

Squid supply chain
Sounds boring? But no, it's actually super interesting to see how the squid goes from the fishing boats all the way to the our plates. And if along the way we meet the quirky folks who make things happen for us to get calamari, well that's a bonus!
I'll forever associate Rhode Island with calamari now.

I need that chicharron!
OMG I'm so sorry to the vegans but my tastebuds are drooling and itching for a taste of that chicharron!
I have to say, kudos to Misha for making an attempt with Spanish. This episode is such a wonderful introduction of the Dominican people and cuisine. I would love to explore this if I ever get to NY.
Also, love Susana, Queen of LIttle Dominica!

Made me crave Vietnamese food!
What a great start to this show! I have to admit, I'm biased because I'm Asian, even if not specifically Vietnamese.
This episode reminded me forcefully of my own visit to Vietnam years ago and I remember how much veggie and herbs they give you when you order pho or bun cha. It was so flavorful and delicious!
Anyway, enough drooling, back to the episode. It was so heartwarming to see how the Asian community in Houston is thriving. And yet it also makes me sad to hear how there is internal conflict as well, related to the Stop Asian Hate sentiment.
There is a wonderful mix of light hearted humor and hard hitting truths pertaining to history, culture and social issues in America, all tossed together with a variety of mouth-watering dishes!
And finally, it was such a treat to see Christine Ha and hear a bit more about her story and journey with food.

Expect more than just Food!
I'm getting this out of the way - I started watching because of Misha Collins, who is the host of the show.
But I was wonderfully surprised to find out that this show is more than just him going around America and talking about food.
It's about the cultural significance, the community who makes and serves this food, the history of the people and ingredients, the social impact of food.
It's about how diverse America is and that, despite all these seemingly glaring differences, we are not so different from each other after all. We are all humans who enjoy eating and sharing with the community.
So if you see any 1 star reviews calling this a "run of the mill cooking show"? Yeah, that person obviously did not even watch a single episode.
