Alice in Wonderland (2010)
Return to the world of Wonder, and wonder you'll find...
Ever since the teaser was released, I have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Tim Burton's new movie, Alice in Wonderland. I was always excited to see new footage, photos, behind the scenes previews and the such presented to the public. And from that, I knew what to expect from what I've been waiting for for months.
Lewis Carroll wrote two amazingly brilliant books in the late 19th century which have captivated many generations, and is considered a classic throughout our cultures.
As for the movie, it was visually stunning. Sometimes it didn't seem as if the environment was CGI. It was dreamlike, to say the most. The detail they put into everything was beautifully rendered. I reckon they did a brilliant job.
It was lovely to see these whimsical characters on the big screen once again. The performances and voice acting was well done. Although Mia Wasikowska's portrayal of Alice may have seemed bland and wooden, I reckon she did a fine performance. Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter was a treat, and a nice and interesting depiction for this hysterical, yet dark character. Helena Bonham Carter, in my opinion, stole the show with her hilariously wicked performance as the Red Queen. She was joyous to watch. And not to forget Anne Hathaway, who played the ethereal White Queen, who was surprisingly alright to say the least. The Knave, played by Crispin Glover, did a great job too. And the wondrously suave Cheshire Cat, played by the amazing Stephen Fry, really was one of the best things about the movie. And not to forget the March Hare, Absolom the Caterpillar, Tweedles, the White Rabbit and many other wondrous characters, who's voice actors did a terrific job.
The music was very Danny Elfman, and did create a wondrous atmosphere throughout the movie.
Likes aside, here are what I found to be not so wonderful: The story was weak, of course. It was rushed and lacked in parts. I wish they gave it more, like an extra half hour or so. Wasn't amazing, nor horrible, but wasn't great. It was okay, at least I was enthralled into the movie. Though, it was predictable and cliché, but I wouldn't let that be a bother. I wished too that they kept the wordplay from the books into the movie, to capture the essence of what made the books remarkable and extraordinary.
Overall, I enjoyed this movie for what it was: an entertaining ride. If there had been more time and a bit of a tidy up, in my opinion, it would've been breathtaking. Though, this is a movie you either love or hate. It is not one of Burton's greatest to date, but still, it is an enjoyable experience.
I give it an 8/10 (though, it would actually be a 7.5).
****/5 stars.
Silent Hill 2 (2001)
A masterpiece.
I remember playing the first game of this series, Silent Hill, for PlayStation back in 1999, and it terrified me. Although, from the horror and dark atmosphere of the game, I came to love it. That was when I was 6.
It was only a few years later when I remembered the Silent Hill series, and decided to give one of the games for PS2 a try. So, I brought Silent Hill 2... and I was exhilarated.
James Sunderland, a widower, receives a mysterious letter from his deceased wife who has supposedly died from a deadly disease 3 years ago, and tells him that she is 'waiting for him in the town of Silent Hill'. And so, James makes a journey to the haunting abandoned town of Silent Hill to find his wife, and uncover the dark secrets of the town, the people and himself...
Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece in all elements - the atmosphere is spine-chilling, the town itself is mysterious shrouded in the thick fog, the creatures lurking there are amazingly designed, the music is brilliantly composed, creating the essence of the game giving you emotions of fear, wonder, sorrow and mystery. But the story itself, is so deeply captivating and mysterious, you just can't turn the console off until the story is solved: I have never been close to crying playing a game before, and this one succeeded. The story is dark and chilling. The characters have so much life in them, and all have a back story that will be discovered when proceeding further into the game.
It's not just your everyday survival horror game, it's something much more. This game is probably my favourite of all the Silent Hill games, and is a well-created, intelligent, haunting, beautiful, mysterious, brilliant, artistic masterpiece. :] I give this a 10, for being one of the greatest games of all time. I recommend you play this. It's a creepy game, but don't let that put you off... you'll love it!
Wanda to kyozô (2005)
An extraordinary game like no other.
Shadow of the Colossus is by far one of the most exhilarating and breath-taking games ever created. It isn't your everyday common shooter, or a repetitive RPG.. no, it's something much different and unique.
I played this game when it first came out to the UK in 2005, and rented it from a local movie store. And at first, it was a very challenging game, and I thought the lack of dialogue might have been a disadvantage.
But no, I was wrong. It was an amazing and epic game. The designs of the colossi are exhilarating, the vast land was fun to explore, the music was incredibly beautiful, the graphics back than were top-notch, the battles were brilliant and fun, and the story was probably the best...
It's a mysterious and quite a sad story, and the ending was unexpectedly tearful, yet wonderfully great! It's left for interpretations, though, but that doesn't bother me one bit.
Of course, the only downfall was the camera and the controlling of Agro haha. Otherwise, perfect. :] This game is one of my most treasured games I own, and probably one of the greatest games I've ever played (And I've played hundreds).
And so, I give it a 9 1/2 of 10. I recommend anyone to play this game, you might even come to love it!
Poketto monsutâ (1997)
Was a brilliant show in the day, now not so much...
I used to be obsessed with this show when I was younger, I still remember the first Pokémon episode I ever watched. Back then, it was in fact my favourite cartoon - actually, favourite TV show ever. Used to collect the cards, play the games, buy the figures, plushies, books, movies etc and wake up praticulary every morning to watch this, and tape all the episodes I could...
Then, I lost interest a few years later...
Pokémon has always been a great franchise when it was released, and the anime I thought was amazing. But of course, obsessions end sometime. Gave away my card, my toys, games, most things Pokémon (apart from the movies and a Meowth plushie I still have :D) I'm 16 now... and only a few months earlier did all the nostalgia of this show come back when I watched the originals online, and it was so cheesy and childish but I loved it anyway. But, the new series...
The series has dragged on too long now. How long is it? 12 years? More? As much as I loved this show, it has to end sometime. I stopped when Misty left, to be honest. The episodes are repetitive, the character's new VA's are... not good... the plot is dull, the characters aren't as great as they used to, and once my favourite and beloved characters of Team Rocket have become a shameful nuisance... and there are WAAAY too many Pokémon.. I lost track after 250th...
It isn't as good as it used to be, the fad as died, no point in bringing it back for the 21st century generation.. it's a memory of the 90's, and should stay like that.
I give this a 7 out of 10, for the originals (Kanto, Orange, Johto) but the newer ones (Advanced, D&P) not so much.
Pokémon was once a great children's anime. Now it's lost it's charm.
