Doctor Who: The Giggle (2023)
Brilliant
I want to state at the outset that there are no words to sufficiently describe my gratitude that someone has remembered the art of the Happy Ending. Not everything has to be tragic. Grim is not synonymous with good. Kudos. Truly. Thank You For The Happy Ending!!
It was almost (but not quite) on the level of "Just this once, everybody lives."
Neil Patrick Harris was a treat. Just perfect. Giddy Evil and playfully creepy. I wanted more.
And that's the only downside to this episode. It felt a bit rushed in places, like there wasn't quite enough time. I would have loved to have spent two (or even three) epoisodes on this particular villain. But The Doctor is always running, isn't he?
Also: Donna Noble working for Unit could absolutely be it's own show. Give her a team and let her run around London.
Doctor Who: Wild Blue Yonder (2023)
Very Good!
So, I have a new addition to my list of favorite episodes.
There is a very distinct type of creepy that is "Doctor Who Creepy", and this episode is perfectly Doctor Who Creepy. The differences between 10 and 14 really come out, and it makes me wish we were getting a whole season to explore them. The chemistry between Tennant and Tate has always been off the charts, and they really shine throughout the story.
And THAT scene? Perfection. I may be the only person in the world who managed to avoid that spoiler, but honestly I don't think it would have made much of a difference if I'd known it was coming. It was joyful and poignant and pitch perfect. I loved it.
Doctor Who: The Star Beast (2023)
They're Back!
Perfectly fine episode, but not really up to a 60th Anniversary level. This should have been more Donna's story than they chose for it to be. Her fate was devastating, and the trite/easy resolution felt cheap and patronising. (Wouldn't have been at all surprising if the cast broke into a rousing rendition of that song from Frozen...) The scene was so weak that it immediately and jarringly threw me out of the story.
Sylvia was superb. Sean Temple was adorable. Rose was very well acted. With the amount of talent on that screen it should have been an easy 10/10. They just got lazy where it counted.
Travelers: Travelers (2016)
Excellent Start
SE01E01 is an intriguing setup with excellent performances. I'm hooked.
The Christmas Chronicles: Part Two (2020)
It's Fine, Sorta
The first movie was fantastic. For some reason they chose to remove all of the things that made the first one so good, and do...this. Santa and Mrs Claus were entertaining, but this felt like it was santized of the reality that made the first flick so good.
And I'm sorry, but the repetitive "Mrs Claus" got really top level irritating. She refers to Santa as "Nick" - his NAME, as a wife would - but she apparently has no name? Just "Mrs Claus", over and over. Did they ever say her name? Did they bother to give her one? If they did, it was so brief it was easily missed and completely overwhelmed by the "Mrs Claus" thing. This is subjective, of course, but it was really grating by the end.
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
Sure, COVID was a thing, but REALLY?
A pie joke and yet another death scene. But this one's permanent! Really!
Shouldn't have even marked that as a Spoiler. Supernatural, the One Trick Pony that somehow still managed to not do it's one trick well. And don't get me started on how much Castiel deserved better.
