Come True (2020)
The twist people got tired of about a century ago
There's no plot structure to speak of, or a plot, really - just a premise and a decent cast of characters - but the subject matter, acting and directing were top notch, making it an enjoyable watch... up until the "twist" ending. "It was all just a dream" has never been the mindblowing trope some sub-par writers seem to think it is, but it's so overdone by now I was shocked to see it in a movie that came out in 2020. What exactly did the screenwriter think this movie would gain from that clumsy swerve? "You thought this story was about science breaking through the boundary between the subconscious and reality, but it's actually just about the subconscious doing its usual subconscious schtick?" It instantly went from a pleasantly eerie experience to a waste of time. I won't be recommending this movie to anyone I know - a disappointing ending really makes you think about all the other fun or productive things you could've done with your time instead..
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
Kept waiting for a twist that never came
The boring domestic beginning of the episode looked like intentional stalling to up the tension. Their first hunt after the apocalypse looked like a joke. Dean's 800th death scene looked like a parody of all his other death scenes crammed into one overly long, unconvincingly weepy dialogue. It looked so oddly comedic and over the top, I genuinely thought "Heat of the Moment" would start blasting any second.
But it didn't.
I kept waiting for there to be a twist - there's no way anyone would think "Dean Winchester dies 15 minutes after he saves the world and achieves Permanent Free Will" would be a good way to end his character arc, is there? This is how season 2 Dean would have died, because he had nothing to live for, not really. Season 15 Dean had learned to hope for a better life, and he had more than one person he cared for. His death was too early, too inconsequential, and too quiet, only really affecting Sam. Heaven may be blissful, but it still looks an awful lot like a Canada-sized aquarium where all you can do is wallow in placid contentment for the rest of eternity.
And didn't Sam outgrow the "normal life with a nameless, faceless wife and kids" fantasy in season 8? By season 9, he had admitted to himself that he couldn't just accept the mundanity of being normal when he knows what's out there. As insulting as this decision was to his character, at least he got to enjoy a world full of free will.
Supernatural has had very few decent plotlines, and not a single truly well written, coherent plot, but the characters are what made it great. Most of them were scrapped for the finale, and it's been a long time since Sam and Dean could carry this show all on their own - even if they hadn't had their character development wiped clean for no reason.
Poor writing choices, poor execution, disappointing finale. I only started watching it 4 years ago, so I haven't even been invested as long as a lot of its fans, and I still feel a bit like I wasted my time.
