The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)
This is how westerns should be, not how westerns are
If you like John Wayne, this is not a western for you.
I like this film because its atmospheric, historic and beautiful. There are no flashy gunfights, just scared men shooting chunks out of each other in dark rooms. There are no waggon trains in this movie, there are no heroic cowboys, just flawed men with a history behind them.
This isn't True Grit or Bone Tomahawk, if I can compare it to any film, I would compare it to Hostiles. America was brutal, bad things happened in beautiful places.
It's a good film, check it out.
Crow (2016)
Watchable but maybe not rewatchable
Its got a good set up, it's got a good sound rack, the acting's pretty decent. Even the atmosphere is good in some places, its just not scary. Also, I might be wrong here but I think they accidentally brought in Irish mythology to explain the creepy woodland and I think the film is set in Whales? So that was a little confusing
It wants to be the Hallow. It is not the Hallow. However there are much worse ways to spend an evening.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Perfectly Watchable...but overdone
I enjoy a gangster move as much as the next guy, I loved Legend and Casino and of course Snatch....but I found this one took itself too seriously, every character chews the scenery, and not in the fun Vincent price way where they know their a ham. They're all really trying to be 'ard men and while the film has some nice plot twists, its kind of Samey.
On a positive note, Colin Farrell is, as always fantastic. I really wish I could say the same for Charlie Hunham because I REALLY want to see him in something good because since Sons of Anarchy he's had a really had time.
There are certainly worse ways to spend and evening, but if its between this or layercake ...go with Daniel Craig.
The Pale Door (2020)
Bad Rap for an Inoffensive movie
I don't know why this one's only 4 stars. It's not that bad.
Its definitely a film you can watch and do something else at the same time, but is that such a bad thing? It's a Horror Western, a genre sorely lacking in content. I don't want to have to take what I can get, but at this stage, I will.
Peterloo (2018)
Chunky with little reward
I'll start by saying what's really good about this film. It gives you a good del of information about what led to Peterloo, who was involved, what the causes were.
However, it's full of speeches and pontificating, which is fine, it was what was going on...but it pushes the actual event to the last half-a-quater of the film and you see nothing of what happened after the massacre.
Historical movies don't have to be dry, downfall is a classic and enthralling whilst still being historical.
The performances throughout are wonderful.
