Camping del terrore (1986)
Not good for its time
When I was six years old in a time long gone, I would browse the horror section of my local video rental store.
This cover always drew my attention and I couldn't help but wonder about it.
Recently I found the cover in one of the VHS dedicated subreddits, so I decided to see what's what and paid 12 euros for this movie.
The special effects were not that bad but with most of the kills, the movie showed the aftermath.
I understand budget wise and the limits of the practical effects, but still Friday the thirteenth and a lot of others pulled no punches when it came to showing gore.
I saw Cannibal Holocaust and thank God no animals were hurt in this movie, but I feel like Mr Deadato held back with this movie.
A disappointing 80's slasher.
Victor Crowley (2017)
The best of the bunch
Saw Hatchet one, two and three and while the second was a dud the other two were entertaining.
This one however pulls it off, tongue in cheek humor, the acting is surprisingly good, the kills are over the top and gory, I laughed out loud a few times.
A movie that doesn't try to be edgy and just delivers.
A very decent slasher flick and I hope to see more of Victor Crowley.
Kane Hodder is excellent as the killer and it was nice to see him in action once more.
Hatchet five, could it be a thing, is it necessary, would our lives be better if Victor Crowley roamed the swams once more? To all of these answers, I answer truthfully when I say YES!
Hatchet takes the Frat Shed, Adam Green please make this.
Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
A Freeloader and his noble grandson
Where to start, this could've been a great children's movie but if you watch closely, other things are afoot.
Meet Charlie, a jolly boy who works as a paperboy only to get his hard earned pounds taken from him by his good for nothing grandfather.
Said grandfather, Grandpa Joe is a drunk and a fiend.
The past twenty years he laid in his bed suffocating his fellow beddies with wet cabbage farts.
He wouldn't go to the loo because the floor was too cold and he couldn't walk all that well.
Enter the golden ticket, guess who jumped out of bed singing and dancing about how he has a golden ticket?
If you guessed Grandpa Joe, you are on the right track.
This is sadly not the end
of his misdeeds I'm afraid,
he touched Veruca's mother.
Without consent I might add.
He couldn't go without alcohol for one day so he stole the fizzy drinks.
When Willy Wonka confronted him with his bull, he gaslighted Willy by saying that he is a crook.
Grandpa Joe is a fiend and nasty one at that.
Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice (1992)
B movie fun which proves entertaining enough
For a second installment this wasn't too shabby.
The acting holds up and the story although nothing special is good enough for what this is.
Some of the kills are a bit lame but the voodoo doll kill is pretty good as are the reporters who get killed by 'He who walks behind the rows' himself.
There's a bit of romance and some drama.
I'm not gonna pretend it's all that good but the makers of this movie at least tried to provide some depth to the story and characters. That's why I gave it six stars out of ten.
Now onto part three and see if that holds up.
Six hundred characters is a bit steep for these reviews, kind of annoying actually.
There I'm done :)
The Horror Show (1989)
Mildly entertaining but too long in the end
I watched this with my father in the eighties and yesterday I rewatched it.
Couldn't remember much beyond the diner scene, electrocution and the turkey scene.
The special effects are decent enough, I love those eighties effects though, so I might be biased.
Lance Henriksen and Brion James do a decent enough job but what they have to work with just isn't enough.
It felt too drawn out and the movie suffers because of it, I think it would've worked better as an episode, cutting it down to somewhere around the hour mark.
The story wasn't that strong to begin with but I was mildly entertained during the movie.
Worth streaming or maybe as a thriftstore find.
I Kill Giants (2017)
Beautiful movie, not about giants though!
Me and the mrs wanted something easy to watch on a Friday night, so a young adult movie about a girl who kills giants seemed like a great choice.
If you expect this, you'll be disappointed!
So I did a discreet search on imdb and found that this movie has as much to do with giants as Beckham had with Bend it like Beckham.
When I found the right expectation for this movie, I was overwhelmed.
Beautiful, touching story, grief, loss and sorrow captivated in a fantastic, symbolic manner.
The casting is perfect and the acting is solid.
It handled the theme very respectfully, in my humble opinion.
A solid and rewarding experience!
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Leatherface the music, this was not too good.
First off, I did not expect a masterpiece or an engaging, profound story.
What I did expect however was some proper pacing, respect for the characters and a little credibility.
I know credibility sounds off, given the genre of the movie, please hear me out.
Leatherface stabs a woman through her chest (with a running chainsaw ffs) lifts her in the air and tosses her in the garbage.
Said woman survives this long enough to play deus ex machina for the two final girls.
About respect for the characters, you bring back the original final girl to have her only serve as a distraction and as puncture bag.
I mean it is a slasher movie, people get brutally murdered, I'm all for that.
It is the genre after all, but she was only there to be disposed off.
A little character building goes a long way when it comes to enjoying a story.
The garage guy and the younger sister were the only likeable characters for me.
About the pacing, the movie was what 80 minutes long and still it felt like an eternity.
The gore was splendid, I mean a bus full of people sawed to pieces by the man himself.
Perfect!
Candyman (2021)
The Candyman can!
I think this is a decent film, the acting is on par, the script expands on the original Candyman and it works well imo.
The movie pulls no punches when it comes to addressing racism, sadly this sort of approach might be needed to get the point across.
Camera work was good, I liked the spectre approach of the Candyman.
It was nice to see Tony Todd at the end, a nice touch if you will.
Do not hate this movie for it's message, there is enough of that already.
Instead turn your gaze inwards and accept that unless we change, the need for this message will remain.
See for yourself, stare in the mirror!
The Babadook (2014)
Gripping movie, one to remember!
This is not a horror movie, this is a movie about mental illness and how it affects people.
As someone who deals with depression andanxiety, I loved this movie.
I'm grateful to Jennifer Kent who directed this, to go with the positive ending.
A lot of us will go under, but we need hope and that's what this movie offered, a ray of light.
Yes, the Babadook will stay with us.
But we can appease it, we all have our coping mechanisms.
Maybe I can stare it in the face sometime, until then I'll survive.
My love for my children is stronger than the Babadook!
"Their completion, my obsoletion"
Thank you Jennifer Kent!
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
There's no review here only zuul
This movie made me feel like a boy once more and I am impressed with it.
I loved the way Harold Ramis was worked into the movie, a very nice gesture. Special effects were brilliant, overall a very good movie.
*batteries not included (1987)
A beautiful movie from the 80s
What a wonderful experience this movie is. I had a few laughs and a few tears.
Jessica Tandy plays her role to perfection. The whole cast delivers a good job.
All in all I find this film beautiful just beautiful.
The Crow (1994)
Beautiful movie, holds up after all this time.
This movie makes me feel nostalgic, sad and happy. I loved every minute of it, the cast is great. I wonder what could have been if Brandon Lee hadn't passed away at such a young age. What I'm trying to communicate is this movie is a piece of art, watch it!
The Harder They Fall (2021)
Great movie
Great cast, decent acting and good camera work. I'm glad that there are still movies made like this. Over the top dialogue between villains and heroes, Rufus Buck cites Napoleon, how awesome is that. The violence at times is how I like it, pure 80s style. Loved it from beginning till end. Delroy Lindo is fantastic in this movie, you know if this was a quarantino movie he would be killed before they got to redwood. Glad to see him make it to the end.
