Oppenheimer (2023)
Perfect
After leaving the cinema and being left with my thoughts all I can say is I was left speechless, I have watched this film 2 times in the cinema and have read the screenplay.
Firstly, Christopher Nolan is arguably the greatest living director and his work on this film is impeccable, the whole idea of doing everything in camera and using practical effects is something I love and we need more of nowadays, I have watched most of Nolan's work and this is his best film for me and one of my favourite films of all time.
The Atomic Bomb scene the first time I watched it practically made me have a panic attack with everything being so masterfully made, one of the main reasons is the perfect score by Ludwig Göransson which sets the moment perfectly.
Every single actor showed up in this film with even the smaller roles being taken up by A-list actors and stealing the show, my standout roles and performances are from Jason Clarke, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr and Rami Malek.
Christopher Nolan casting Cillian Murphy as "Oppenheimer" is the perfect casting choice as his performance is one of the best i have ever seen, he is in almost every single shot/scene and the load he carries to deliver in this film is enormous and he delivers in everything single sense of the word.
To me this film was never really about making the most money and breaking the box office and i did not expect it to pass $500m let alone just under 1 billion, the whole "Barbenheimer" movement was hilarious and i believe it really boosted popularity of both movies and will be remembered as an important cultural event in the history of film
At a 3 hour runtime you would think this film would be drawn out boring and bland, that could not be more wrong, when i watched this film i was completely transfixed and it was the easiest long movie for me to sit through as the film is so hitting and fast paced.
In my opinion this film will never be forgotten as i think it has truly innovated films and we will see inspiration coming from it with years to come with everything it does so well, i really have no bad comments about this film and i believe it is an instant classic and a must see film
This movie is perfect 10/10.
Wonka (2023)
Magical
First of all this movie is just amazing, I thought from the trailers that this movie would be slightly unbearable with some of the shots from Timothee chalamet but having just watched it, I am pleasantly surprised with the performance.
Having seen Paul King's other work you can really tell he directed this movie as it's riddled with his charm. The comedy is actually quite funny and I really enjoyed Calah Lane in this movie I thought she did an excellent job as "Noodle" and she had the 2nd best performance in the whole movie except Timothee.
The story of this movie is everything you expect from the trailers and really could be an original Roald Dahl story as it is well paced, funny, smart and of course magical.
I will 100% watch this movie again and I actually want to watch it again already having only just left the cinema.
The editing, set design, costumes and cinematography are just perfect.
Cow (2021)
It's all in the eyes
When finding out about this movie i lauged, i thought a movie titled "cow" would offer me some comedy and a good time but that certainly wasnt the case. This movie was a harrowing story of a cow called "luma" and how the dairy industry fails these animals so badly.
This movie offers little to no dialgoue and the majority of the story telling is told through the eyes of the cow, it is nothing short of genius, you can see right into the cows eyes and see how it is in pain and how it is uncomfortable and not happy in its environment. At a later part of the movie we see the cow happy in the fields free with her friends but yet she had no idea what was coming. The films climax is right at the end as the cow is shot directly in the head on camera, it is so disturbing and leaves a mark on you and makes you have no trust in farmers and the awful things they do on a day-to-day basis.
To summarise this movie has fantastic cinematography, soundtrack and editing, to really tell the story of this cow. I fully recomend this movie as it is just beautifully awful.
Sex Education (2019)
Lost it's way
For me the first 2 seasons were really good, but with the 3rd season I feel the show derailed and just lost the flavour it had in the previous seasons and wasn't really enjoyable.
But the final season for the most part I thought was better then 3 until we get to final episode. WHAT was the ending it actually makes no sense it's 1 step forward for 2 back it feels like we're basically at square one they literally break up and go back to how the season started. I hated the new characters they were unbearable and didn't provide me with much.
I loved all the characters in the first 2 seasons but sad to see such a horrible 2 more seasons. Netflix destroys another show.
La La Land (2016)
Incredible bittersweet romance
I went into this movie with very high expectations and they were definitely met, the ensemble cast delivers spectacularly and the chemistry between Emma stone and Ryan Gosling was electric.
This movie possessed such a bittersweet tale of how a "perfect couple" so madly in love had to separate to achieve their potential.
The cinematography in this movie was nothing short of spectacular, a lot of the movie is shot with minimal cuts and it is really impressive. The movie feeds you with so much information with symbolism, for example how far apart Emma stone and her new husband are at the end in stark comparison to how close Emma stone and Ryan gosling were and literally were in the dream she had before she woke up back to the drab uninspired reality of her new husband. The ending to me means they still love each other and she is not fulfilled with her current husband, I believe they did have love it was just wrong place at the wrong time unfortunately.
This movie being a musical it was obviously important for this songs to be good and that is exactly true, the songs were so rife with catchiness and I feel like I will definitely listen to them again.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves a romance film or just Ryan Gosling's charm
Overall this movie is wonderful and I will definitely watch again.
I, Daniel Blake (2016)
Tragic this movie needed to be made
This movie isn't the best technically and definitely doesn't have the best storytelling, but what it possess is a damning story that reflects the way uk fails the people who are in a difficult circumstance or can not work. I have met so many people in my time with prejudice to people with benefits, and this movie articulates what its like for the people on benefits from day to do and how the system can be some broke and tormenting. The whole system is broken and unbelievably frustrating, it does not adequately support the people who need it the most.
I went into this movie expecting very little but I got a lot out of it (a great distaste for the government of our country.)
The acting and cinematography can be good at times but for main part it's just ok, although they were some very emotionally moving moments.
This whole movie is obviously a message for the failed society we live in and how it needs to change in the future.
I would recommend this movie to anyone as I feel like you learn a lot about how truly shocking our world is and how the working class and those who can't work are collapsing from the strain of having a Tory government.
Since this movie came out the country has only gotten WORSE and half of the population is at breaking point.
We need change and this film shows exactly why.
Beautiful and brilliant at times, overall great movie.
The Irishman (2019)
Phenomenal
Firstly, this is one of the best movies I have ever seen Martin Scorsese does it again.
DO NOT be threatened by the run time this movie did not get boring for me at any points and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The performances and the story telling are the best parts of this movie. Obviously Al Pacino and Robert De Niro were incredible and put up some of the best performances I've ever seen, but the performance that really stood out for me was Joe Pesci's role as "Russell Bufalino" as he played a part we haven't really seen him tap into before and how he came out of a 20 year retirement just to make a movie with arguably the 2 other best actors.
Each arc of this movie was amazing and i thought the story was told in the perfect way. The way the bond between Jimmy Hoffa and Frank Sheeran was articulated was just amazing to watch and obviously the movie delivers on amazing lines like " i heard you paint houses" which is a cultural reference to the book and true story that this movie is based upon. But for me the best part of this movie HAS to be that scene with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci as they break bread in prison for the final time, Joe Pesci's acting is spectacular and it really articulates the true meaning of crime families like this and how in the end it wont be worth it which is further shown in the final few minutes of the movie and definitely the final shot of the movie.
After "The Irishman" I'm not sure if anyone can make another truly great original Italian Gangster movie again.
I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes gangster films and anyone who wants a step into cinema.
Truly Phenomenal Cinema.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Not good
I was really excited to see this movie to be honest. And yes it did have amazing visuals, great performances and good parts but wow this movie felt like such a drag, i quite literally couldn't wait for it to end. I did really enjoy robert pattison and willem dafoe in this but the story was quite empty as im not actually sure what i have just watched. I found the dialogue quite difficult to understand but to be fair the score was amazing. It truly is such a shame that this movie was so terrible with such potential. I would not watch this again and i think you should only watch it if you want to see some good acting. Never watch this for it's story.
