Xia Luo te fan nao (2015)
A good comedy, with a "chicken soup" style ending, but good enough
In the movie, Xia Luo (portrayed by Shen Teng) is on his way to his high school crush's wedding. To hide from his raging wife, who barged in during the wedding, he ducks into the bathroom. When he comes out, he's back in high school. Even though it all turns out to be a dream and he never time traveled, everything he has in the dream represents what he subconsciously thinks he wants. Fame. Money. Success. A beautiful wife. But in reality, he doesn't even know what he wants. When he is poor, he wants riches. When he is rich, he wants his original (poor) life back. In real life, his mother is dead, so in his dream, she is alive. In real life, he is poor, so in the dream, he is rich, etc. But he eventually realizes that all the money and fame only make him even more miserable than he was before. His mother starts dating his friend, his wife cheats on him, etc. His "dream life" is beginning to shatter.
The lesson of this movie was very valuable (be happy with what you have), but kind of chicken soup-y. However, overall, I would say it's a good parody on the "dream lives" of many of us.
Mo Dao Zu Shi (2018)
And the Best Animation of the Year goes to...
A lovely, yet sometimes melancholy story. Just right for me. I didn't discover this until this year, and I had already read the novel and watched The Untamed. But this took the previously beautifuly-woven story to a new level, really. The voice acting had my jaw drop every few minutes, and the details (such as read ears) were handled perfectly. Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were EXACTLY as I had imagined them.
BUT! But, in my opinion, the character's faces looked too alike, and I could barely tell Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen apart. However, this is honestly worth a try, and I swear, you shall not be disappointed. Why are you still here? Go watch it!
Lang ya bang (2015)
An interesting, intriguing story with lots of Ancient Chinese politics
This was up when I was still a kid, and needless to say, I was stunned. The actors seemed so natural, so flowing and fresh in their acting. The plot was rather simple, but it drew me in. A loyal son seeking revenge for a wrongly dishonored father. Lovely. And the political intrigue was shocking (though not in a bad way). This isn't just a show that you would want to binge on a Saturday night, it's a drama that you want to sit and carefully understand every detail, take in all the sights.
Qing yu nian (2019)
Absolutely beautiful, nothing can compare
I'm gonna say it right off the bat: this was the best show of 2019. My family and I have watched it many, many times (to the point where I really believe I will puke if this is mentioned again), and it has never ever delivered anything else but surprise, laughs, and approving nods. In other words: it's a good show. My favorite character must be Fan Sizhe, who's name is Versace in Chinese. His actor (Guo Qilin) shocked me with how well versed he seemed in his role. And Fan Xian. Oh, let's not forget the MC. He really acts like what I would act like if I ever transmigrated into a world like that. On top of all that, the political intrigue, oh god, the political intrigue. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT, believe it or not. And good thing is, the intrigue MAKES SENSE, unlike some other dramas (I don't wanna talk about them). Aaaand, there's the angst. When Teng Zijing died, I was really trying not to cry. Anyway, let's not talk about that. The story flow was magnificent and logical, with some comedy peppered in here and there. A good mix, if you ask me. The action scenes were very nicely done, and most of all the props and clothing. They were BEAUTIFUL. Incomparable. So overall, this series is really, really good, absolutely binge-worthy, so now, go and watch it!
