Chang Can Dunk (2023)
Heartfelt Story about Overcoming Self
At first I thought this was going to be a basketball-heavy film, but it also touches on themes of family friendship, romance, peer pressure, and mental health. I love that we're seeing more Asian-American representation in films, and that Disney is creating more original and diverse stories with characters that we can relate to.
Definitely recommend this film!
Spoilers ahead read if you dare:
1) I thought that they were going to address why Chang's father left and the whole story behind that, but they never touched upon it. We do see the mother finally taking his belongings out to the front yard to dispose of them, so perhaps he's just very out of the picture and that explains the conflict between Chang and his mother.
Julie and the Phantoms (2020)
Nostalgic, Entertaining, Great Message for Kids & Adults!
Okay, I'm a 22 year old grad student. This is a Rated G, Disney Channel Original Movie-like show, and I freaking loved it.
This show is so sweet, funny, and entertaining. I found myself downloading the entire show's soundtrack and jamming to the very well-written and performed songs! Like seriously, all of the people in this show are extremely talented: singing, instrument playing, and acting.
Like I mentioned, it reminded me of a Disney Channel Original Movie, so I approached it as such (especially as Kenny Ortega directed and choreographed most of this show). Don't get me wrong, I love DCOMs, but they can be cheesy. Yes, this show had it's cheesy moments, but very enjoyable! I even watched it with my husband, and he liked it too! We laughed, cried, and jammed out.
Hope Season 2 comes soon!
