My Fiona (2021)
Some aspects are terrific, others less so, but overall very good, and definitely deserves a higher rating than the current 5.8
The grief of all the characters is well portrayed, complex, sad, interesting. The main relationship that develops doesn't seem fully fleshed out, and the explanation for the suicide is ambiguous (perhaps it was meant to be so). Excellent acting all around, and I was drawn in from the beginning with my interest never flagging.
There are at this point so few reviews that a single "1" score has dropped what would be about a 9 average down to a 5.8, which is definitely not fair or reasonable (numbers don't care, and as Mark Twain said, there are "lies, damn lies, and statistics."). My real rating would be an 8, but to bring the mean up I need to put a 10. I hope more people will do so as well. Just a few more 10s (or enough 9s or 8s) will drown out the outlier rating of 1, and thus cause the mean to represent a "true" reflection of people's opinions about this movie.
(It's very sad that the main character has died IRL. She was terrific in this role and seemed to have a very bright future in movies.)
Who Is Erin Carter? (2023)
Well heck, I'm enjoying it regardless!
I'm on episode 4, so maybe it will tank soon, as one reviewer said it does, and yes, it requires a lot of suspension of disbelief, but so far I like it anyway. Plus, ALL shows of this genre are ridiculous to varying degrees. No one but the good guys and gals can hit the side of a barn with their firearms, one person (little OR big) can unrealistically fight off hordes mano a mano, and on and on. I don't see this show as out on the margins on such measures. Just the normal silliness, which I can excuse because I'm used to it and because I'm drawn into this plot.
I disagree with early reviewers about other things. I think the acting is fine, the characters are interesting, there are unexpected twists and turns. I'm enjoying the unfolding story of Erin's life before Barcelona. But I'll come back and let you know if my praise takes a nosedive after this episode.
Harlan Coben's Shelter (2023)
So far so great
I'm enjoying the heck out of Harlan Coben's latest series so far, just as I've loved every book and TV series by Coben, since the beginning. I sure don't understand the low ratings by some folks. As with every Coban story, it grabs you from the start, and doesn't let go. Compelling characters, twisty stories, unexpected turns. Fantastic cast (who are these goofballs saying the acting is bad?). All the young characters are well cast, sympathetic, funny and serious, as each is called for it. And there's no beating Tovah Feldshuh, Constance Zimmer, or Kristoffer Polaha. I'm excited to finish the ride.
The Mother (2023)
Ignore the plot
A kind of fun watch, for the actors and action. It takes some interesting turns and some stupid turns, and finally, it misses a few turns. In the end it comes up a combo of satisfying but hollow due to the missed opportunities, gaps, and thuds here and there. But in between, you get to watch J Lo doing a great job looking fierce and beautiful, angry and sad, worried and triumphant. With better direction, a few more scenes to flesh things out, and better editing, the movie could have been great fun instead of just kind of fun. J Lo is not at fault for the picture's faults. She is a capable action hero, despite what some reviewers have said.
Side Effects (2013)
Surprise!
I was into it from moment one, and what a fun ride, all the way to the flip side ending! Great plot, terrific actors, extremely absorbing. The twists kept coming, and I was pleased to the point of giddiness with each one. I love it when a movie keeps me guessing and I guess wrong.
I'm confused by those who gave low ratings. Opinions are all over the place for viewers and critics alike. So look at the first few critic reviews - Indiewire, Variety, NYT... they got it right.
I don't know what movies some of the other folks were watching. Is it 100% believable? No. But is it 100% emotionally engaging, surprising, "crazy" fun? Absolutely!
L.A.'s Finest (2019)
It's deeper than you think
For about the first four episodes, I thought, "I'm quitting soon. This isn't written well and it's kinda boring. But OK, one more episode." Then it started getting good. Still cheesy, still some beyond silly moments. But way more compelling. A deeper, darker, and more interesting story behind each of the two main characters begins to unfold, and each story goes in unpredictable directions. I would really give it an 8, but to counteract the dumb negative reviews, I'm giving it a 10.
Sijipeuseu: The Myth (2021)
What are these poorly written nonsense reviews about?
So far it's great. Intriguing exciting fun. The 1s and 5s up to now are obviously planted, from the way they're written.
