Jim Gaffigan: Dark Pale (2023)
Painful!
Because it's Jim Gaffigan, I kept waiting and waiting for it to get funny, but it never did. One horrible bit after another. I have never been so disappointed with a Jim Gaffigan show before now. It was tasteless, tactless, and just really inappropriate. His style is the same as always, so you expect it to be funny, but he chooses one tactless, inappropriate, or downright disgusting topic after another. I want to tell people to just skip this one or you will never bother watching any of his shows again. So don't even bother, thinking maybe these reviews are wrong. Just spare yourself the hour of disappointment.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Love this movie! Watch it every year!
It's a tradition here, like How the Grinch stole Christmas
Good for young and old! Handles the gloomy parts without being scary for kids. Shares positive messages, like the original, but in a family-friendly, and more enjoyable way IMHO.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Totally don't understand the haters!
I thought this movie was great. The visuals were amazing. I found the story touching. Yes, it's the story of a young girl overcoming adversity and we've seen that before, but what do you expect? A serious drama where there's crime and corruption and everyone dies? There are plenty of those movies out there too. And yes, the dragon talks! It's a Disney/Pixar movie. Did you underrate Frozen because the snowman talked?!? I appreciated the behind the scenes clip about how much effort they put into trying to make this movie represent various Southeast Asian cultures, including all the scenery, different types of people, fighting styles, etc. I also thought the casting was good - I'm a huge Daniel Dae Kim fan. Just watch it and see for yourself.
Occupation: Rainfall (2020)
Story is ridiculously disjointed
I gave this a try just to see the special effects, and there were some good ones. Some interesting alien ideas. A few good actors, but most just unbelievable. Not sure how much was bad writing versus bad acting. But my biggest complaint is that the story just jumps around. I honestly don't know what they were going for is large sections of the movie. I kept going back to see if I missed something, but there's just no continuity in several huge plot points. I get that it was an intentional cliffhanger, but the last 10 minutes made no sense. It had potential and I wanted to like it, but it seems like a huge missed opportunity to me.
Max Cloud (2020)
Did you like Mystery Science Theater?
This movie reminded me of MST3K, except it's mocking itself. I think yes, it's supposed to be bad. It's mocking the way action movies used to be, and how simplistic video games used to be. Maybe if you're not old enough to remember those things, you'll just think this is bad - not so bad, it's funny. I really liked it and thought Scott Adkins was great casting for the old "All American hero" character.
The Cascadia Treasure (2020)
Laughably bad!
Weak story. Bad acting. Annoying music. Ridiculous "action." I forced myself to finish watching to see if it went anywhere, but seriously, don't bother.
