Tenet (2020)
Robert Pattinson's Performance Prompted Me to Write Review
The dialog and the music are just awful. This film is terrible with out Hans Zimmer. The music director is terrible. Robert Pattinson is probably the only good thing coming out of this film. The film is awfully complex and confusing. The plot is somewhat tedious if you really think about it. It is a logic mess. Christopher Nolan utilize a simple concept (time travel again, and traveling backwards) into a needlessly, tried-to-be mind-blowing film (like Inception), which he failed. The film is about beautiful bro-love. Neil loves Protagonist, and ultimately he dies for him (or the mission, but you have got to love someone to die for him, right?).
John David Washington's performance as the protagonist is just boring. He's emotionless. Christopher Nolan put John David Washington there just to ride on the BLM movement of Hollywood. You see more acting from Dimple Kapadia, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Robert Pattinson. Personally, Robert Pattinson's performance really shined, and it prompted me to check out his other films (minus Twilight). The protagonist is not the protagonist, in many ways, Pattinson is.
If you have watched some of Christopher Noland's films, Tenet is quite easy to understand. Highly Over Rated.
At least, the Chinawashing is subtle here.
Half Brothers (2020)
the plot doesn't make sense at all.
This movie has a terrible plot. He could go back to Mexico after Asher is healthy, but he didn't, and stayed in America.
Though his relationship is dead with his first wife, he could still go back to visit Renato.
Venom (2018)
Hollywood should move to Beijing, China
Hollywood should move to any city in China. Hollywood producers and movie studio are trying to pander to Chinese Communist Party through out this movie. At the very beginning the movie is set in Malaysia, but most of the characters are speaking perfect Mandarin Chinese, which is not the predominant language in Malaysia.
Later, the main character lives in Chinatown in SF, he shops in Chinese store, use QQ chat (the pirated version of Whatsapp), QQ is owned by Chinese government and military, so anything you send on the platform, the server in China gets a copy of it.
I cannot believe the length Hollywood would go, to make their Chinese Communist Masters happy, which is a shame.
Without Remorse (2021)
This is not Tom Clancy
This movie is terrible. Political correctness is ruling our lives. Good guys= black dudes, female officer; bad guys= white dudes; oh come on.
Just how many female officers are there in special ops? The differences between men and women are there for a reason, that includes physical differences and abilities. Just when this "political correctness" BS would stop???
I just want to see a good movie, and OSCAR, Hollywood have to bring race into it.
So Stupid.
Midway (2019)
Hollywood has become Chinese Communist's propaganda machine.
Hollywood has become Chinese Communist's propaganda machine.
Anyone has read a little bit about the Pacific Theater in World War II knows that China was ruled by KMT (Kuomintang, the Nationalist Party) in WWII.
KMT ruled China from 1911 to 1949, formal name of China was called Republic of China (ROC), and it was a democratic state (if you want to be critical about it, it was in transition to become a fully democratic state; nonetheless KMT holds democratic values.) After WWII, KMT and CCP (Chinese Communist Party) were engaged in civil war, and in 1949, Chinese Communist Party won the civil war, and changed formal name to People's Republic of China (PROC).
ROC (KMT) moved to Taiwan.
In this version of Midway, film make took away everything in reference to KMT. During the famous Doolittle Raid, Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle and his crew had to ditch their plane and landed in China (Chinese eastern coastline to be exact). It was ROC army rescuing them.
The film studio wanted to pander to CCP government in Beijing. They took away any reference, insignia, emblem of KMT or ROC. A common insignia and emblem of KMT and ROC is Blue Sky with a White Sun. It should be visible on soldiers' uniforms or hats.
CCP was a tiny faction in China during WWII, and they only operated in north-western part of China nowhere close to the eastern coastline. In recent years CCP (Chinese Communist Party) had gone great length to "modify" history. CCP wants to present itself as the dominant force in fighting the Japanese in WWII; thus, you could see CCP leaders, films, TV programs to proclaim such notion.
The core of the American values are: liberty, justice and prosperity. China is a totalitarian regime. CCP has no democratic values, nor does it possess any American values. World War Two was about free world fighting fascism; China is a fascist state. It is ironic for Hollywood to Kowtow to Beijing and alter content to their masters' liking.
Let's not forget about Top Gun 2. The studio changed the entire plot, removed Taiwan flag (ROC flag), Japan flag. Top Gun 2 was about regional conflict between the US and China. Beijing found out about it, and forced the studio changed it to a conflict between the US and N. Korea.
Shameful.
Interstellar (2014)
So, They Could Communicate with the Past, and They Failed to Tell Which Planet?
I believe this movie should be rated 5-6 stars.
Cooper had the ability to communicate with the past, he just can't tell NASA or his daughter the destination???
If Cooper gave the right information, they could avoid all the death and sacrifice.
Mankind from the future could control gravity, and space time, and they failed to gave solution to blight????
When Cooper returned to the space station, he could share all his adventure stories, so future generations learnt his adventure, and in time, when they have the scientific ability, they could pass this information to Cooper in the first place or even people from even earlier. It's a paradox.
Nolan tried to be scientifically correct. Cooper gave his daughter a mechanical Hamilton watch. I believe everyone knows how a mechanical watch, it is driven by springs and gears. A mechanical watch's movement direction won't be changed permanently by gravity. Gravity would slow down the watch, but when gravitational influence were gone, the movement should go back to normal, so there is no way, Cooper could use gravitational force to "encode" a message into the mechanical watch because the hand of the watch wouldn't stay "jumpy": moving back and foreth. He would have better luck using gravity to leave message on the floor. The whole "watch" narrative was a big mistake.
Cooper loved his daughter, okay, but what about the other kid? He acted as if he only had one kid. That's just weird.
It is a good movie, black hole, wormhole stuff are easy to understand, but when you really put your brain to it, you see plot holes. Entertaining but this movie is actually quite stupid.
The Hateful Eight (2015)
Quentin Tarantino Can Do Much Better Than This.
Quentin Tarantino wanted to make a movie that's 2 hour and 30 mins long, but he had no good plot, so he dragged on and on and on.
Daisy Domergue should have been shot when John Ruth and OB were poisoned. it is called damage control y'all. See no point for Major Marquis Warren to live Daisy and the rest of the gang alive after John Ruth was dead. Warren sure sensed danger. Instead of damage control, Warren kept on deducting and talking until he was shot, and when the bad guys got the upper hand, the story didn't end there. The story dragged on for another 40 mins. The end is just pathetic because all the good guys and all the bad guys died.
my god, Quentin Tarantino could do much better than this. What happened? I think it is because he's getting old. Too old to write/ direct a good movie.
The only exciting acting was by Walton Goggins. There's a little twist to his characteristic.
SAD
Deadpool 2 (2018)
A lot worse than the first movie.
I've no idea how people give this movie a positive review. It is Green Lantern all over again. there are bits and pieces high point, but they don't last a minute or two. Incoherent story line, trying too hard to be funny, zombie like characters just name a few problems with the film. I was expecting much more after the success of the first movie. I thought with the budget the franchise now has, the studio could produce something better, but I was so wrong.
Don't waste your time on this movie. 7.8? the rating is bought.
Sanctum (2011)
It Takes a Diver to Get It.
Sanctum is one of the best film about scuba diving, more to the point, cave diving. Cave diving unlike scuba diving require special skills: the way you move your fins, how you trim, and it requires additional equipment: primary, secondary torches, back up torches, helmet etc...
This film depicts scuba diving and cave diving quite accurately. It shows the thrill and the danger involved, and it shows what's the moral and discipline, courage that's necessary for a good scuba/ cave diver.
I'm a scuba diving enthusiastic myself. My friends lost someone in one of the diving trips. Practice and discipline are crucial for diving activities. There are just so many armatures going to difficult dive sites, and sadly that's exactly how accident happen. That's why when I see amateurs I always try to warn them about the danger involved.
Now, about the film,
As a skilled dive you can tell most of the actors, if not all are not skillful divers because they rarely obtain balance in the water, constantly kicking their fins. There is a tiny bit of problem with the beginning of the film: when Frank and Judas pass that restriction, even though they drop their large spare tank, as an experience cave diver, they should have smaller tank attach to their gear, and many cave divers bring spares of everything: mask, regulator, tank etc...
With these flaws, this film is still one of the best film about diving.

The Snowman (2017)
Director really screwed this one up.
The story had potential, but the writers and the director screwed this one up big time. The story line is incoherent. The director treated the last show down scene poorly. There's no strong motive for Mathias to become a serial killer. Katrine Bratt was a bad detective, putting herself in danger time and time again.
Somehow an alcoholic and just switch it off just like that? There must be miracle. While the movie building toward the climax, we learnt that killer's weapon is just a medical/ industrial wire fastener. While our brave hero Harry Hole moves towards the vicious villain, he had every chance to put one in his head, but good old Harry doesn't use his sidearm, instead, he obeys villain's command, sits down, gives up his superior weapon. Harry must not be a good calculator, who can't calculate risk, putting all in jeopardy.
The movie is intriguing, we could have seen much more from the film, but the story itself is lacking. Too bad, because I like Michael Fassbender.
Baywatch (2017)
This is one of worst movie I've seen this year.
The Baywatch remake is a disaster. It has zero substance. Purely childish. The beginning of the movie doesn't make any sense at all, lots of bad joke. The movie makes joke on young guy with chest hair around the nipples. What kind of bad joke is that? There are tons of bad or stupid jokes in the movie.
Showing a dead man's penis is supposed to be funny? To play with a dead man's penis is supposed to be funny? Playing with dead man's penis while they are acting as detective?? WTF???
The story line is just stupid. They are
The Exorcist (1973)
I had never thought this could be true.
My girlfriend's grandmother is a devote Christian. She claims to be Christian, but not as devote as her grandmother (her mother's side). Last night around midnight, I forced her to see the Exorcist. I had to force her because she never wanted to watch horror movie at night; however, we ended up finish the movie at around 3:30 am. After we finished the movie, she told me the movie is almost the same as what her grandmother described what an exorcism would look like. Since her grandmother is a devoted Christian, she is among the member of the most devoted Christians of her Church, and would be called to perform exorcism whenever the opportunity present itself. Moving objects in the room, long tongue, transfer of demon, are just some phenomenon her grandmother described. Different phenomenon occurs in different exorcism, it doesn't mean that these phenomena all present in single exorcism. Her grandmother also said that it's usually a group of people perform as exorcist, not just two persons. I have watched the Exorcist for many times, but never before I would believe it could be true.
Eden Lake (2008)
This is a really sick film,
*** This review may contain spoilers *** This film promotes only violence. There is no order, no love, no hope.
The kids in this movie are monsters, they torture, they kill. Only a twisted mind would ever come up with such a script. What good does this kind of film bring to audiences? Does it bring comfort? Warmth? The Light into our soul? Characters just killing off each other. There is no police, there is no order in the film. The main characters should leave when they first encounter hooligans, and yet they decide to stay by the lake, and confront the hooligans, multiple times? This is so stupid and so ugly. Anyone who is working against the bully is killed. This kind of film brings only darkness.
A dark world without hope, only twisted minds would "enjoy" or appreciate this kind of movie.
And this is not the world should be.
This movie is rubbish.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
This movie should never exceed a rating of 6
The movie is 8.5 on IMDb; however, this movie only deserves a 6 maybe even 5, considering the poor special effects. It is obvious that most of the scenes are made in front of a blue screen. I doubt there is any scene that's made outside the studio. Acting is okay per se, but not superb. There are some inconsistency in the story line. There is not much detail on the night of which Doss was left "alone" on the ridge, that is highly unlikely, not with Japanese soldiers scouting the area. Maybe Mel should spend more time and provide more details or make it less dramatic. It needs more explanation on why he turned to a "conscientious objector". If you like this kind of movie, watch saving private Ryan. It is better. Though Mel did a better job on describing gruesomeness of the battle field. Shallow and a little hollow is what this movie is.
Animal Kingdom (2016)
This is not a kingdom, but a zoo.
After seeing the original film, I must say, the Australian film is a classic, much much better than the TV show.
This TV show is full of B.S. ideas. With a crew as unorganized, uneducated, undisciplined, as this, they should be severing life sentience within first 6 months of operation. The writers/ producers treat our law enforcement as dumb & dumber. The matriarch, Smurf is an uneducated, temperamental, ultra-selfish character (all of them are wildly temperamental and selfish), which is bad for business. The operational director, Baz is just another steroid filled, no brainer. How could this kind of character lead any successful heist? Not mentioning the rest of the crew, a sociopath (schizophrenic), a drug addict, and another muscle guy with no positive attribute.
The smartest character, a boy (Joshua) is so smart that he failed to find help (his teacher tried to help him, his girlfriend's family could help him etc
). Writers/ producers thought putting elements of crime, violence, sexy dudes and gals together can make a hit show, but this show is a complete screw up.
The female characters don't even show their nipples, come on.
Lost in the Pacific (2016)
This is one of the worst "movie" I've ever seen.
I don't know how much they pay Brandon Routh, it must be A LOT for him to participate in this terrible "movie".
Vincent Zhou's last "movie": "Last Flight" starring Ed Westwick, had the exact same plot.
They are the same movie. With the same exact plot. They have the same problems: inconsistent plot line, incoherent script, poor story development, terrible CGI, terrible set, and idiotic lines for characters.
I wonder how much they paid Brandon Routh and Ed Westwick for these terrible project.
Actors please have more taste and guts. Say "no" to stupid Chinese movies.
The Walk (2015)
The Movie is Plain, Not Very Exciting.
This movie is shallow. The plot is boring; conversations between characters are very loud. Acting was not good; the acting was focused on changing accent. Cut away the noise from the conversations, the movie is plain. This should not be made into a movie, but a documentary.
Philippe Petit is a trained professional, so there is not too much drama about the whole thing. He had a great idea of walking across the twin tower building, but that's about as exciting as it gets. Yes, this movie is for family, but I would rather see a documentary about the whole thing.
The Martian (2015)
Just tell me how much kissing ass to china could Hollywood provide.
This is not a great film, it's a "feeling good" film by the director. There is not much excitement, suspense going on.
The producers tried to put unnecessary plot line about China providing one of their rocket (China to the rescue, just like Gravity). I know its for the Growing Chinese market, but it plants incoherent story telling in the film. Afterall, if your head is clear, you would noticed that Chinese help is quite redundant.
Matt Damon is all alone through out the entire film, and actually its quite boring. All the plot lines are predictable, and not much depth to the film, it doesn't make you think, aside from high school science knowledge.
My girl insists on watching this film, I told her not to see it in the theater, and she wouldn't listen. She dislikes the ending, stating that the film ends abruptly.
I am am quite disappointed of how the film turns out, what a waste of time and money. It has 8 points on IMDb, overrated. The problem with IMDb nowadays is that people give mediocre films high grade....
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
J.J. Abrams's Star Wars is a reboot, not a sequel. He did a poor job.
J.J. Abrams didn't do a great job. I was so exciting, expecting so much from this movie because he did good with Star Trek. At the same time, I was afraid that he would turn this Star Wars into an action flick, my fear came true(the force is strong with this one). At the beginning of the film, when the credits were rolling, my excitement was replaced with fear, fear leads me to anger, anger leads me to hate, and now I'm suffering from yet, another bad Star Wars movie. Anyone who has seen the first 3 movies would expect more(A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi). What he did to the movie, is turning it to a superficial action flick, a remake of A New Hope (a third Death Star? really? Hasn't the dark side learned that it doesn't work?).
J.J. Abrams didn't do a good job for the movie as a whole, the First 3/4 of the movie is dragging. There are way too many flaws. It's a remake, and spending too much time, trying to explain the universe of the Star Wars, but most viewers have already known that. Many plot lines that are illogical. Luke had no reason to leave the Alliance, even with his nephew turned, he had more reason to stay, the director needed to explain more. Luke is a Jedi Master, he is the strongest with the Force, he wouldn't leave the Alliance to face the Dark Side. The conversations between many characters were dragging the story and unnecessary, J.J. Abrams were trying too hard to explain: 1. relationships between characters, 2. the universe of the Star Wars 3. the story line. Most if not all of the viewers have seen Star Wars movies. The director was trying too hard to explain, which ruin the first 3/4 of the movie.
He should put more emphasize (dig deeper, elaborate) on family, the force, the fight between the Light and the Dark. The plot line should be based firmly on the original movies, not wasting time on explaining things. J.J. Abrams doesn't understand what made the Star Wars so special, he doesn't understand the Force.
The original Star Wars movies are great because it combines galactic elements (space fantasies) and religions (our everlasting endeavor to search the true meaning of life) . Star Wars is the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey" of our time. What is the "Force"? The "Force", as "A New Hope" put it, is an ancient religion. The "Force" is the representation of many religions. Religion is our answer to life. The training is life itself. Those who are with the "Force" will emerge from the conflict (the life itself, and as the movies put it, the war between light and dark).
What J.J. Abrams failed to do is to grasp the concept of the "Force", and what the "Force" meant to so many of the fans. The "Force" is the "Way", is the path we take to fulfillment, to Nirvana, the path we take to complete our life. It is our everlasting quest to search the ultimate answer of life: Why are we here? Why is there Good and Evil? Light and Dark? Which side should we choose as we walk down the path of our lives? Why did other people choose different paths? When many of us are controlled by desire, some of us search another way, try to control our desires, while trying to find fulfillment or the meaning of life.
A Jedi believes in peace, passive and calm. A Jedi practices to learn the way of the Force, but it takes time and restrain(like a monk). A dark lord acquires the power of the Force contrary to the way of Jedi. A dark lord doesn't control his or her desire, hate nor fear (like a monster, a sinner). These qualities are the source of his or her power, and the training for a Dark Lord is generally shorter, that's why it is so tempting, but there is a catch to shortcut, there is always tradeoff. A dark lord would always trade his or her physical wellbeing or mental health with the power. In addition, dark lords always become master's slave or try to take the master's place (so their relationship is always in jeopardy.) The light saber should always maintain its original form, no fancy cross guard. The idea behind a lightsaber is one of the elements making the Star Wars great. "Simplicity" is powerful, it is the idea behind the "lightsaber", the Force and Jedi. Jedis are simple, they resist temptations, they lead a simple life, they are the most powerful characters in the movie. Lightsaber is simple, it is not a long range weapon, it is not easy to operate, but it is the most powerful weapon. The most fancy weapon is a blaster (or Death Star?), it is long range, easy to operate. A light saber is the most powerful weapon in the hands of a Jedi or a Dark Lord. Not everyone can see the force, nor feel it. It is power in the most basic and the most powerful form. Only the trained warriors/ monk can wield the Force . George Lucas and J.J. Abrams were not wise to change the light saber. To be simple, is to be strong, the most powerful idea, is a simple idea.
J.J. Abrams did an acceptable job in Star Trek, but not a good job in Star Wars. Disney needs to find an European director for the following Star Wars movies. A director who is a devoted(someone believes in faith), with some consultants from other religions, bring some depth to the movie.
J.J. Abrams' movie should be called A New New Hope.
and, I like Stephen Colbert's plot much much better (find it on Youtube). May the Force be with the next director because the Force is not with J.J. Abrams nor is it with Lucas.
The Walking Dead (2010)
The show is getting worse and worse...
This show is getting worse, after 2 seasons, characters behave as if they are new to these. Two people in the group venture out for food and supply, and they don't even know how to protect themselves from strangers. Zombies still pop out from nowhere when the first thing they do should be to clear the area. They should know not to trust stranger, and take basic percussion, and yet, they act as if they have no basic knowledge of putting up guards, and if they lack all those knowledge, how the hell could they survive this long??
I fast forward everything for 2nd season and 3rd season. The show is getting worse.
Felon (2008)
Great Film, Very Powerful... You will love it.
This is the only movie that has moved my heart in recent years. I accidentally saw this great movie on HBO. It was almost two in the morning and I was going to bed. Just before I went to sleep, I wanted to see what's on TV. The movie had started for about 20 minutes. I saw Val Kilmer who is one of my most favorite actor, and I decided to check it out for a few more minutes, but I couldn't stop watching. My eyes were full of tears, and my emotion was overwhelmed when I saw this movie for the first time.
I just couldn't bear to switch it off. I kept watching, till it is over at around three thirty, and I was aware of my flight at eight in the morning. Thank god it was on HBO, so there wasn't any commercial.
I'm holding a master in law degree, and I've seen the inside of a Taiwanese prison for 4 months, I had the chance to talk to many prisoners, and to see what's their lives really like. God, the movie is realistic; Due to the cultural differences, and different ways to run a prison in Taiwan, there are discrepancies in the minute details of prison life between two countries. However, prisons in all countries face similar problems. The director did a great job trying to show the kind of danger, fear and challenge, a prisoner faces in the cage: just to mention a few: corrupt prison guards (most of the time, including the warden), violent prisoner (because many of them doesn't have a future). How wealthy or influential prisoners get to be treated much better than the rest of the prison population.
The one thing the director didn't quite get it, is to show how difficult it is for Wade to tell or show Laura the difficulties he faces in Prison. Director should show it is difficult for prisoners to communicate with the out side world, even with their own families. The guards would tap the phone, listening in their conversation, watch over their shoulders, use surveillance camera to spy on prisoners, just to make sure the prisoners don't talk about guards' misbehaviors and bad things happened in the prison(like guards selling electronics, drugs, or even woman. You name it, you can get it.). Some guards practically run a gang inside the prison; or if a prisoner gets beaten down, the guards would also make sure this doesn't leak out to their family members and friends. What happens in prison, stays in prison.
Let's not forget, the guards check on every mail a prison sent out. The director should show more about Wade's shame, as a man, our society expect us to be the leader of a family, so he doesn't want to talk about things happening to him.
I love Val Kilmer, he is one of my favorite actor. I love most of this work, the Sulton Sea, the Heat. A great actor builds solid characters on vivid foundation. It's a shame not to see him and his great work on the big screen more often. Let me also mention, the music was beautiful and punctual.
More often than people in the judicial system would ever admit; people who don't deserve prison term, get locked up all the time (just like Porter). Prison is a place to teach its visitors lessons: for criminals, it's time to make connections with others or learn new trade craft. For people with a good heart (conscience), it's time to reflect and grow to make them stronger, wiser (like John). However, prison, for the most of time, eats away the goodness in you, gradually and consistently until it gets the best of you, and breaks you if your mind is not strong enough. The most important lesson a prison can teach you is at the end of the movie: "Prison desensitizes you, but it also forces you to see what's the most important: Family and loyalty because a con like you knows, neither exists in this place."
Jumper (2008)
This is a terrible movie, waste of time and money.
I love Bourne movies, but to be honest, this is a terrible movie. Jumper is based on a good idea, and it has potential to be a hit. However, writers and director lacks imagination, and they didn't check their papers for coherence. One with superpower and has lived 8 years on his own should be much more sophisticated, than the "BOY" in the film
Though I really liked the Bourne, which prompted me to watch jumper. Clearly, this is a commercial film, but I still expect a much better effort from Doug Liman. A terrible movie from Doug Liman
I hope people can save their time/ money for a better film. and guess what, they are making Jumper II, so Jumper I made them money after all.
Sunshine (2007)
This is one of the worst Sci-Fi I have seen in years...
I love Si-Fi movies, but Sunshine is simply terrible.
The film contains some random slides from time to time, just trying to scare the audience. It was uncomfortable and not necessary.
The plot line was incoherent, and it simply doesn't make any sense. For example, the choices the crew members made, how the director (or the story itself) had a terrible grasp of the technology.
The last 1/2 of the movie doesn't make much sense to me. (In the end, when Capa was in the cube with the warheads, you notice the cube was spinning, but Capa wasn't affected a bit by the movement of the cube. There are way too many inconsistencies.) I know the director tried to make something new; after all stories about space ship, sun, nuclear weapon and sacrifice, cowardice are made again and again.
However, techniques like: shaking the cameras from time to time, making blurring shot, or inserting horror pictures several seconds at a time doesn't make the movie original.
I wasted 2 hours to watch this movie from cable. I don't know why people give it a score of 7.X.
"Different" can simply mean "terrible" not "original"
The Bourne Identity (2002)
I love, love Bourne Series
Jason Bourne movies really represents the action movie of this decade, great character and plot lines.
I hope they can keep making it, and put out a new Bourne Movie every 2 years. I believe this movie about espionage is as real as it gets. The incorporation of technological advancements, clear truthful character personality, the movie is really great.
To think of it, Bourne is not like Bond, who is always invincible, surrounded by girls. The only inconsistent plot is about Marie, who died and disappeared from the series so suddenly, but it didn't stop me from enjoying the movies.
All in all, Bourne is the only movie that I really enjoyed, and bought DVDs, of the past 3 years.
