The Harder They Fall (2021)
Thoroughly Entertaining Watch
It's not often that we are treated to a western which is an absolute treat to the senses.
Directed by Jeymus Samuels, at its crux the movie is about an outlaw who in order to take revenge against someone who wronged him, re unites with his gang.
This western pulls a rare amalgamation of standard western tropes with relevant socio-political commentary in a never seen before fashion.
What stands out is the almost Tarantino-esque use of upbeat, almost innapropriate, soundtrack interspersed throughout various segments of the story, the humour and chemistry between the ensemble led by yet another fantastic turn by Jonathan Majors.
Well choreographed fight scenes preceded by expository dialogue are reminiscent of the old classics.
It's singular fault lies in some underwhelming character especially that of Regina king.
All in all a must watch for anyone who is a fan of classic stylish westerns.
Together Together (2021)
A Solid Dramedy which deserves your attention
I feel like this movie is getting a lot of unwanted hate with regards to its execution and ending and I feel the criticism is somewhat harsh.
Anchored by two commanding performances, together together is about two lonely individuals finding solace in each others company when Anna played by Patti Harrison acts as a surrogate for Ed helm's Matt.
Over the course of 90 mins we see them developing a sweet platonic bond which is equal parts honest and awkward.
With some powerful takes on relationships, parenting and friendships this movie reminds us of the unexpected turns life's journey can take and the comfort one can find in the most unexpected of places.
The Third Day (2020)
Criminally Underrated
I understand the disappointment felt by some viewers as all they were expecting was a folk horror with lots of ghosts or jump scares, instead what they were served was a tightly constructed emotional drama about two individuals struggling to hold it together after a personal tragedy and how they get mixed up in the cultish practices of the inhabitants of an island. Lead by incredibly nuanced performances by Jude Law and Naomie Harris, by giving them each 3 episodes to showcase their brilliant acting prowess, the show made sure unlike a movie, the character arcs where not rushed. The cinematography, creative descions to use separate colour palates for the summer and winter settings, the background score all gel perfectly with the overall ambience. The show has a couple of incredible twists and a cathartic ending. Ultimately the show talks about grief and pain, and how every individual has their own way of dealing with it and how it can affect the people they love. With strong support from Katherine Waterston and incredible chemistry between Paddy Considine and Emily Watson, the third day is one of the better limited series to come out of HBO in recent memory
Chemical Hearts (2020)
Unusually heartwarming
It avoids the typical teenage romance genre clichés and instead focuses on character development and how relationships at a young age shape individuals into who they become as they grow older
Great soundtrack and performances by the lead pair
