Apple Tree Yard (2017)
Big build up to nothing
Excellent acting, high quality production but a dud storyline.
Luck by Chance (2009)
Yes, clichés can be good too!!!
You just can't leave the movie after watching the very 1st scene! A prospective female actor approaches a not-so-big-but-still-hanging-on producer and she gets an indecent proposal. Just another cliché? May be, but just watch Alyy Khan and Konkona Sen Sharma (especially few seconds of Konkona's expression at the end of the scene) in the same clichéd scene, and you know that clichés can be made more interesting than you have ever thought of with good actors and a good director! The director has even extracted the best out of cameos! The guest appearances have been carefully chosen and flawlessly executed by Hrithik, Amir, Shahrukh, Abhishek, Akhay and everyone else! The movie is full of Bollywood...oops...Hindi film industry (courtesy Neena "the-yesteryear-star" Walia) stereotypes but it's executed in a never seen before manner by a endless bunch of talented people and an intelligent director.
A must watch!
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Hope is a good thing :)
Hope is a good thing - this is the best quote for me from the movie. When I am depressed, I watch this movie, and there is not a single time I have not felt good.
From the very first scene, with a drunk and disturbed Andy, to the last scene, with a free and relieved Andy - I enjoy all the moments. You don't watch some movies, but you start feeling them, and believe me, it is one of them. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are exceedingly good in this movies and so is the storyline. Some of the best moments of the movie are - Andy winning beer for his co-workers (yes, Andy refers to his prison mates as co-workers), Andy resisting the violent advancements from the homosexual prisoners and getting beaten up each time but still never giving up, Andy playing the music record without giving an ear to the warden, Brooks struggling to live his post-prison life and finally committing suicide, the warden madly asking the poster about Andy and finally discovering the tunnel, Red getting the parole approved, Red finding the stone and Andy's stuffs and above all, Morgan Freeman's narration. The script of the narration is brilliant and Morgan Freeman's baritone gives it the needed effect.
If you love true cinema, this is a movie for you. If you have not watched it, do it now!!! If you have watched it, I am sure you must have done it more than once. The movie deserves it...
Taare Zameen Par (2007)
A must watch
Sure to touch your heart. Not even a single scene is out of place. Songs are beautifully written (watch out for "Maa" - You are bound to have moist eyes), even the rap song makes sense...Can you imagine Aamir khan being absent in the whole 1st half of the movie. And i never felt his absence...Darsheel excels and couldn't have been better. Aamir khan, as usually delivers the best. Somehow i felt the kid's father's character could have been moderated a bit but it never impacted the flow and storyline. Kudos to Aamir for taking up such a concept and making such a beautiful movie. I can wait for 2 more years for such a quality movie. Must watch movie.
