The Beta Test (2021)
Laughably bad
The only comedy in this is how bad it is, from the writing to the acting it just left me rolling my eyes.
The premise isn't set up all that well, and there doesn't seem to be much motivation for the main characters actions other than he's an asshole. It bounces between eccentric and boring in such a disappointing way.
I'll admit I did laugh when he filled out the purple card, but I can't tell if that was the intention.
False Positive (2021)
Predictably contrived
This movie was predictable, strangely directed and in my opinion miscast. I couldn't relate to the characters and could clearly see what was happening throughout. Disappointing, and a bit weird at times, the film left me feeling robbed of the potential talent of the actors.
RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under (2021)
Down Under has so much potential but Ru has ruined it
This is the worst version of drag race despite Aus and NZ being excellent places for talent. The show is overproduced to a point where it is not enjoyable to watch, it's clearly rigged, and leaves you dying for some good producing.
I can't recommend it, especially how clear it is that Ru is clueless about NZ culture and is only taking advantage of their COVID-free status.
Talhotblond (2009)
Disappointing and cliché
This documentary was incredibly disappointing. The story definitely piqued my interest after watching CATFISH, but after only 20 minutes I was incredibly bored with its presentation and, especially, the narration.
It's put together like an incredibly cheesy story, the way it's narrated by one of the people involved makes it feel unauthenticated and overplayed. I found myself rolling my eyes quite a few times, "She started sending me photos... and, well, you can guess where it went from there".
I feel that documentaries work best when facts are presented in an interesting and creative way, usually in a way in which you can make your own conclusions. My first thought was that Montgomery was a disgusting man, but I really tired of the film telling my this over and over again.
When the monotone voice claims "Wow, so intense", I have to laugh. I can't say this documentary was for me, maybe it will be great for those who maybe prefer something that resembles a dramatic reading, or a lifetime movie.
Overall, I found it boring, cliché, cheesy, and rather annoying. Perhaps I prefer documentaries when the narrator is not playing the part of a character, and is stating facts and setting the scene, rather than relaying emotions with corny, monotone fluff sentences.
Notes on a Scandal (2006)
A great drama thriller that will play on your emotions, even after the film has ended.
There is so much I could say about this film, I first watched it about six years ago and have revisited it probably once a year since.
This film has always stayed with my since my first viewing, crouched in the back of my mind waiting to be explored all over again. The story is simple but intriguing, the suspense is built nicely and I found myself easily drawn in to the lives of the characters as the story progressed.
Dame Judy Dench easily steals the limelight in this film, she is what made it so... unforgettable. She plays her character with ease in a way that makes you feel her obsession, her need, and her grief. I loved this role for her and felt that her acting was outstanding because I found that this character stayed with me for a long time after the movie ended.
Cate Blanchett is a favourite of mine and is certainly not to be overlooked, her role is delicate and pulled off rather well, especially when sharing the screen with Judy Dench. Whoever decided to cast these two together is a genius.
I loved this film. Loved it, I have not tired of watching it and it was a really pleasant surprise and I feel that it has actually been overlooked in some aspects. But I guess it's easy to feel that way when you're passionate about the film yourself.
I rate this film a solid eight, probably even a nine as the acting is superb and the story dragged me along, never letting me lose attention even for a moment.
A great drama thriller that will play on your emotions, even after the film has ended.
uwantme2killhim? (2013)
Intriguing and interesting, solid movie.
I had not read the Vanity Fair article, or had heard anything of this story before I decided to watch this film. I actually watched it by chance with no knowledge of what it would really be about and was immediately sucked in to the story.
It has a great pace, but I'm a sucker for quiet, sometimes brooding, films. There are a few twists and the film keeps it interesting by exploring flash backs and fragmented time lines, this was a wise move otherwise the movie could have really fallen flat and come off as slow and boring I feel.
The acting is adequate, there will be no Oscars but my attention and suspension of disbelief were held well. I felt myself connecting with the leads, they captured my attention well which is not an easy thing to do so it added to my enjoyment.
While this film does have some flaws, I feel that it deserves a solid seven for the experience it delivers and I think it deserves that extra nudge for the fact that it is "based on true events".
Interesting to say the least, worth a watch.
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Laughable Material
I checked out this movie on IMDb before I saw it last night and I saw that it had quite a few high ratings but I didn't get my hopes up because to be honest most horror/thriller films are let downs.
Drag me to hell is no exception, it started out okay, with a couple of silly moments that I passed off because it still brought a couple of frights but as the movie progressed, the quality decreased and I soon found myself laughing at the bad writing and comical horror scenes.
This film also brought the laughs through some "Scary Movie" type themes... ones that just grossed you out and made you laugh, not scare you.
I gave this movie a 5 star rating because although it was a pitifully predictable horror, it still entertained me with laughter, I left the cinema with a smile... which isn't a good thing for a horror film but I enjoyed it all the same.
I say if you're looking for a lacking horror film that will make you jump once or twice, make you laugh lots more and you like being able to know exactly how its going to end then this film is for you.
