Reds (1981)
Epic bore ...
Epic? How about suicide provoking? There's nothing quite like watching rich liberals parading around in their summer whites and discussing all the world's ills. I gave up after the Eugene O'Neill scene at the beach house
the characters were too despicable too soon for me to want to get to Russia (where I was anxious to go from the get-go). My wife wants me to see if it gets better, but the truth of the matter is I would've walked in the theater immediately after the beach house scene. Very disappointing ... some wasted talent and I can only imagine dollars ... I'm not sure if there was a political motive to telling the story of these two characters ... as individuals, I found nothing interesting about either ... they appear to have been spoiled brats with no real knowledge of the "working man" (try raising a family on those wages you're looking to unionize) ... and I have to wonder about the depiction of O'Neill ... just wonder because even his romanticism/alcoholism was more appealing than the main characters.
Eddie Monroe (2006)
Great flick ... and the big man (Paul Vario) was excellent !
I've been writing hardboiled crime fiction for a number of years now. When a writer develops a story he always has a character/actor in mind to bring the story to life. Last weekend I found a new one in Paul Vario playing uncle Benny in Eddie Monroe. This was a slick film highlighted by Vario's presence both on and off the screen (as his voice-over narration is also heard). I also especially liked the actress playing Benny's niece and Eddie's ex-wife, although everyone did a fine job in this exciting movie about playing with bad guys and the double-crossing that goes with it. A nice job all around ... and Mr. Vario shined brightest. He's gotta be my Tony Gangi someday ...
