Don't Look Up (2021)
Funny and enjoyable
The actors and actresses are all great and deliver stellar performance. The musical scores are near perfect and some of them even memorable. The sarcasm is hilariously relatable about today social media, corruption in politics, greed of few, manipulations, division of general public on pointless stuffs and diverted attention from actual problems.
Most importantly, the story is coherent and overall a very enjoyable watch. Many other movies and shows have tried to include politics but failed to make story relatable nor enjoyable. IMHO, this one succeeded. But some side of political spectrum might find this movie offensive and issues overblown so might need to have a sense of humor to enjoy. And the ending is perfect for a satire story.
1899 (2022)
Only good if you haven't watched similar shows
The show is below average. Nothing really happens in most of the series. It runs on one tiny predictable mystery which is not enough for multiple episodes series. Show runners were abusing 'mystery box' concept and doesn't explain audience just for the sake of prolonging the show. Some people might like the style but I find it cheap.
The show should have been 1-2 hr movies like Thirteen Floor or Matrix. But for those who haven't watched similar genre, I can understand this might be mind blowing for them. The production value is still better than many current day films and the story comes together to a satisfactory ending unlike some experimental films. Good music too. I just don't find the plot particularly good. But this is the kind of shows you let it play on a second monitor while playing game on another. You won't miss much of the story that matters to the central plot as it is very thin.
Another Life (2019)
I lost faith in humanity
I can't get past second episode. The characters who are supposed to be professionals act like teenagers with many issues. Their decisions are dumb; their dramas are laughable; they don't have emotional maturity. If these astronauts are the best that the whole world can come up with to represent human race for first contact, then it may be time for other race to take over.
The Old Ways (2020)
Good film
This movie is a pleasant surprise. Not so much horror but it is a good supernatural story with satisfying ending nonetheless. All characters are believable, acting is good and music is good. Themes of self-sacrifice, compassion, redemption are a plus. I will rate 10/10 to bring the rating up as I believe it deserves more than its current 5.4 score.
The Birdcage (1996)
Timeless masterpiece
All characters are well written and performed. Funny and satisfying from beginning to end. Nothing feels forced or pretentious. I have watched this film many times over the years and each time, it never failed to entertain me. IMHO, Nathan Lane stole the show!
Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Simple fun
This movie doesn't give you social lectures, doesn't try to be a cryptic pretentious art piece, doesn't have worldly symbolisms, doesn't have complicated plots with usual holes, Cage doesn't even have a single line; this is just a movie aiming to entertain you and it succeeded for me because I find it light, fun and satisfying.
Evil Takes Root (2020)
Better than most low budget movies
IMO, Evil Takes Root deserves more than current score of 4.4/10. It stands out among low budget horror movies despite lacking in scary moments. It has decent plot, pacing and ending that makes sense in its universe. Characters don't frustrate me with their stupidity either. At least, it has a proper story unlike recent trend of films that focus more on themes, art and delivering a 'message'. I would rather watch this than Relic (2020).
Melancholia (2011)
A little boring IMHO
I am not into emotional, theme based, artistic films similar to "Relic" in which I know the symbolic meaning but can't make sense of the ending. It is easier for me to achieve immersion if there are set rules and logic that the story follows. In stead of focusing on symbolism and themes to seem impressive, if the traditional movies with logical story and conclusion happen to have honest touching stories to move me, then they get my applause.
Melancholia is bearable to me unlike other artsy fartsy films such as plot-less "She Dies Tomorrow." But on the subject of inevitable ending of the world, I would prefer the story structure of "Knowing" over this. Helpless to prevent but still doing their best to preserve whatever is left of their world, be it their offspring or their legacy: it makes much better stories to me. It is no wonder "the Inner Light" episode from good old Star Trek TNG could move me much more than Melancholia. On the other hand, I can't complain anything about the acting and music in Melancholia. So 5/10 average score.
The I-Land: Brave New World (2019)
Can't get past 20min of first episode
The characters, their thoughts, their actions are so dumb that it pains me to continue.
