Edi (2002)
Best European movie of 2002
I saw this movie in Festival on Wheels held in Ankara and I was quite impressed by the way the director tells about the story of two men in a very simple but at the same time in a very impressive manner. It's not a simple story of two homeless Polish men, but a successful reflection of the life through those two heroes. In general, it also proves that though there haven't been many productions released in recent years, Polish cinema industry has a very strong tradition and well-characterized film language of superior quality. I'm looking forward to seeing the new works of P. Trzaskalski and young talent Marek Lechki.
Otobüs (1975)
An excellent thriller based on the real story of thousands
I've just seen the movie and when I think that It was made in 1976 I just can't help myself from thinking deeply on this hidden success. Before seeing the movie I hardly heard about the movie and most people living in Turkey don't know there is a movie based on such a sensible and tragic story of thousands of people who emigrated from the countryside of Turkey to Europe without simply knowing anything about the new life they'd come across when they get there. The story cover all what you expect; cultural shock, immigrants being looked down on and being humiliated, xenophobia, incurable dead-end, betrayal and what's more important of all; struggle simply to survive... All those who describe themselves Europeans and criticize minorities living in their country of not having been able to integrate themselves to the society and still staying isolated deliberately should see this movie and think twice before making such cruel criticism. It explains quite well how so-called "criminals" of today once was the victims of the past.
Modern Times (1936)
A masterpiece by the master of all masters
There is no doubt that Charles Spencer Chaplin is one of the greatest directors and performers of the whole cinema history. Having produced countless amount of short-comedy movies Chaplin started to get concerned on more serious issues while the world was experiencing difficult times. Modern Times is one of his best movies as well as probably one of the most criticized ones as ironically it got too much critical. After watching the movie you can understand what Chaplin was trying to do was not simply making a movie but far beyond of it. You understand how well he digested what he had been observing during his era and the transformation of human power into the mechanical technologies. After all, the result was an intoxicating mixture of comedy genre and political criticism in a masterpiece: Modern Times.
