The Time Traveler's Wife (2022)
This Show Took Me By Surprise
I never read the book and I didn't like the film, but this adaptation has me so invested. Each episode made me laugh and cry, many times back to back, and that tonal shift works so well because of the acting and chemistry between the actors. In real life, there are times when you have those emotions all wrapped into one, and I think this made the story grounded despite being about Time Travel. The show often treats time travel as a metaphor for memories and the tendency to get stuck in the past or be scared of the future. It reminds me of The Haunting of Hill House with the way ghosts can be seen as a memory or a wish, and not just supernatural beings. This show, much like the characters, isn't perfect and is messy. That is what makes me like this and not the film, which felt saccharine and safe. This show has allowed certain things to be fleshed out that were incredibly rushed in the film, which really took me out of the story. I both looked forward to and dreaded each new episode, because I knew it was one closer to the end of the season.
