I Am Legend (2007)
impressive, yet questionable logically
no denying, the film was spectacular, in its cinematography and storyline. will smith however did not seem to be the right man to be the only homo sapien left on earth. his credentials in the movie was weakly established. the events that took place when the virus became airborne was imperfectly unfolded to the audience. flashbacks were good as story tool but there wasn't much that was fed to the audience's mindset in order to completely appreciate the demise of mankind. the focus of the catastrophe was too scoped in at NYC. and we are to believe that the entire world has been wiped out? his radio message, illogically didn't reach the colony, which was portrayed to be military-guarded. how so? less was explained on the survival of Anna and Ethan. If the darkseekers were dangerous and have roamed the entire world, it was not effectively translated in the movie. Again, too scoped in with NYC. his argument abt NYC being his Ground Zero was basically unacceptable. perhaps i am taking the stride literally, too literal in fact. But it is in fact possible to reach on literal basis to the audience.
Lady in the Water (2006)
Enchanted, or maybe not ?
i only watch this on TV so there are possibilities of scenes i failed to watch (due to censorship and the works). In all truth, M Night S movies have been delightful treats in the worst possible ways. I watched LITW twice by now and i still wish i know what are the underlying message on top of 'we are meant for a purpose' theme. I mean, could there be political symbolism in the fairy tale of the narf? is there more to the story? Or is it meant as a treat to the pressuring minds of the people of this age. A cookie mix to simply enjoy the ride in the world of fantasy. The scenes are beautiful, the script is brilliant. Yet, you cant watch and expect something 'logical' not in this movie. There is no surprise to the conclusion of the story. No big surprise like The Village or The Sixth Sense. But its a story spinned to entertain. Perhaps i will find out the message MNS is actually trying to instill. But until then, i would simply enjoy the tales of Story.
Bo Ba Bu (1998)
Both funny and demeaning
i think its an awful movie. the character of the woman was portrayed as a helpless, wavering person. the two men who took her in, not only took advantage of her but treated her like a whore and a commodity goods. they used her sexually, dumped her when they felt she was a problem and when she was finally brought back to them, again they tried to take advantage of her sexually. on the other hand, the story reflected how influential and powerfully manipulative a woman can be to men. she was more like a log rather than a tempting seductress and yet, with her skinny and quiet and submissive personality, the men tailed her like hungry dogs. all in all, i was uncomfortable of such story. especially when women are portrayed as nothing more than sex slave to men.
The Fountain (2006)
its a movie like no other
the casts are strong, specifically Jackman and weiscz. she was simply beautiful and Jackman - i have never seen such strong acting. though it left me thinking long after the movie have ended, since i couldn't quite grab the overall intention of the movie, i think the scenes were beautiful, precise and plain mesmerizing. the desire to create immortality for the different needs of different jackmans..that was pure impressive. i definitely going to watch it again until i understand the story completely. for once, it was alright to have silence in a movie, but with such deep formation of statement through the acting.
Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006)
Its worth 3.5 hours of ur free time
I am no professional critic on movies. I don't know quite how to appreciate the cinematography or the story playwright to make a professional comment on the movie. Although i do have some expectations, being a Karan Johar movie and all. I think, from my view, the story exist. Karan Johar actually had thought process and he delivers. His idea - what if you meet your soul mate after marriage - was valid and personally i think it does happen to us lowly people. the issues, the dilemma, the failure of their own marriage. it wouldn't be easy to portray. SRK and Pretty's marriage, build on the platform of friendship, has cause to crumble.Rani's marriage, though Rishi was portrayed of being too in love with Rani fails because Rani, by person, was a character that could have problems in expressing her feelings. UNTIL she meets SRK, whom she feels could connect with her. And that is yet another hard thing to portray. The constant tears from Rani was quite a show to put on. Though i daresay SRK needs to work on his expression, they stay the same from one movie to another. But as for Karan Johar, of all the viewers who THINK it was a waste of time, i do not think the rest feels the same. Its about internals the actual issue being carried forth. Sometimes, technicality makes one loses focus on the actual pictorial story. Karan is brave in putting the issue right smack in the face of all. The highly-taboo-ed issue. But it happens. And maybe its time us the audience needs to go back and put some thought into it too. Regardless of the technicality.
