Death in Small Doses (1995)
Disappointing
I found this TV movie disappointing, i did have high hopes for it at the start but found the end dismal at best. There were several other people who could have had sound motive to kill Nancy, yet these possibilities were readily dismissed by the police and the DA. With being so determined to convict the husband. Perhaps the intention was to leave issues unresolved that there was never any answer to what happened, with no real proof that Richard killed Nancy. With this movie being based on an actual trial, however it does seem to portray how some people are convicted with no real conclusive evidence. Having said this i did think Richard was the killer as he seemed so detached from Nancy's death and the concern he displayed for her life policy did seem a little fishy. Still the movie seemed all over the place to me and there wasn't really a resolution to the story as the viewer is left wondering if justice was done or if in fact her killer got away, or if Nancy did in fact kill herself.
Band of Brothers (2001)
Brilliant
The Band of Brothers mini series is without a doubt one of if not the best mini-series I have ever seen for the following reasons. The mini-series is foremost faithful to the journey of Easy company and is one of the most historically correct recollections of WW2 experiences i have seen. The shooting, special effects and finish of the series gives the audience the feel of being right in the mist of the action. (A similarity to Saving Private Ryan). The writing is excellent with satisfactory weight given both to the plot (over story) and character development. The audience gets to know and care about many of the main characters, and others that wander in and out of the story.
We emphasise with the struggles of the men, war-torn and traumatised and come to realise without a doubt that even those men who returned home alive did not return unscathed. Most importantly the Band of Brothers although a story of war is ultimately about the men of Easy company. This is the driving force behind the series, how a company of soldiers became a company of friends/brothers. It truly echoes sentiments retold by veterans of WW2 that they fought not for themselves but for each other.
Lady in the Water (2006)
It's no sixth sense.................................
I didn't enjoy this movie half as much as I did Shyamalan's 'sixth sense' which was riveting, thought-provoking and a rather spooking. Since then however although the concepts of his movies tend to be continually thought-provoking and do contrast to the typical Hollywood movies currently being churned out at increasingly alarming rates. I found I was rather let down with this offering. It didn't have that great twist and wow factor that the sixth sense had. Nor did I leave the cinema thinking 'value for money' because it wasn't. Bryce Dallas Howard's performance was more disappointing than her performance in The Village...'Yawn'. The plot although interesting was predicable as I figured out the 'twist' half way through the movie, from which point I lost interest and would have walked out of the theatre had it not been for the good acting from Giamatti and the scenes with the funny Young-Soon Choi and her mother. Lol The next time Shymalan has a movie out I doubt I'll fork out the money to see it in the theatre, but rather wait till it comes on the telly.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Johnny Depp... :)
Any movie with Johnny Depp tends to be good but as Captain Jack Sparrow he excels himself. This is a really good movie and I loved every minute of it. The funny moments were hilarious and there were times when there were tears in my eyes for laughing. In fact i would say 'Dead Man's chest' was better even that the first and although this movie was a continuation of the first it could stand on it's own. If there were any negatives to the movie i was say that Keira was it. I don't know why but I just cannot stand her. I also hated the end because of the 'to be continued.....'. I really dislike when movies end like that because I am a very impatient person. Overall the script was great, the acting was outstanding and the sets and locations were beautiful. Without a doubt I will be the first in queue to see the 3rd movie whenever it comes out.
