Garage Olimpo (1999)
more than just a movie
this is the single most disturbing film that i ever watched. when i came out of the cinema, i cried for about half an hour, something which i have never done on any other film. it is because this film is so real. even now, after two years, i start to cry when i think of certain scenes.
marco bechis was himself captured in argentina, so he could draw from his own experience, and it definitely shows. fortunately for him, because he is half italian, he came free again. others were not so lucky, and this film is a monument for them.
What Dreams May Come (1998)
"ugghh !!!" or "why I don't like R.W. any more"
man i've seen a lot of bad movies, but...
ok, i saw this in a sneak preview when it was released, and i also felt like crying -- when i realized that you actually get money for making stuff like this.
a friend of mine hates robin williams for a long time. i always remembered him in, for example, fisher king, and in my opinion he just chose a bad role sometimes (jumanji...). one great moment in fisher king was the scene when parry falls on his knees in horror on the street at night because he cannot stand the tragedy that happened to him any more. i regularly used to cry on this scene, because his horror seemed so real for me. but then there's "what dreams may come", this materialized superficial candy-dream. it was a real pain having to watch the sugar-coated pictures this flick provides. and in one scene, williams makes the exact face as in fisher king. and i realized it was all fake emotion. so he not only let me waste two hours of my time, he also destroyed fisher king for me. and i will NEVER forgive him for that.
Ôdishon (1999)
a sadistic nightmare
i have seen a lot of gore movies since i was twelve. this is the first film where i very nearly puked; once during the movie and twice afterwards when i thought of this scene. hmmm.
the really strange thing is that it starts like a harmless lightly comic love story, and it goes on like this for such a long time that i thought i was in the wrong movie. but at one point maybe 40 minutes inward, there is this very static scene with a phone and a large sack. i was maybe the only person in the theatre that realized where this would lead to, and i did not walk out. i wish i had. it's a great movie, but it's also a sadistic nightmare.
Kichiku dai enkai (1997)
really good, but too cold to be great
this movie is as violent as it will get. if you really want to get rid of somebody, show it to them. except if they like watching people eating other people's brain out after having them tortured to death. but, IF you can stand it, its a great movie. it was first shown on a film festival with a good reputation, and like everybody walked out. afterwards, the director of the festival apologized in public and said that they had not seen the film before.
among other things, kichiku shows some aspects of japan that maybe you did not realize before.
