Interstellar (2014)
It looks good
This film is another of an increasing number of films with so many 10 out of 10 reviews, that I am left incredulous when I finally get to see it. It's great to look at, once we get into space, and the story is interesting but it's also too long, the sound is dreadful (whisper whisper whisper, murmur mumble murmur, LOUD LOUD LOUD!) and the script writing is at times so Scooby Doo that it becomes a cringe to watch. There are also too few characters, such that some seem over used, in roles which would be better split, were the script to remain plausible. And overall, it's the script that is poor, not the story. I was so disappointed. Apart from the visuals, this film is nowhere near being one of the best, and the best of this genre remains 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Sisu (2022)
Beautifully filmed scenery and violence
Otherwise poor beyond belief. Absolutely no attempt to be believable or realistic. The main character it transpires, is some sort of unkillable superhero, with incredible skills and experience, yet blunders about the landscape putting everything he holds dear in peril. We stopped watching, then prepared ourselves for some comic book entertainment and started again. We lasted 10 minutes more and gave up. This film doesn't reach anywhere near the level of John Wick, Dead Snow, Dredd, Fistful Of Dollars, etc. I am shocked by the huge number of of 7, 8, 9 and even 10 out of 10 reviews. To end positively, the filmography is excellent.
Zone blanche (2017)
Derivative & unlikeable
We gave up on this early, really early. Imagine Twin Peaks and Les Revenants rewritten by AI, but missing the charm and originality. Only a couple of the characters are likeable or interesting, the rest vary from the slightly derivative, to out and out corny. We've seen some of them before, many times before in different productions.
I don't understand why the police are placed at the centre of the story if the writers aren't interested in presenting their work seriously or in any detail. The story could have been told through the eyes of others just as easily. The casting of two central characters who are related to one another is confusing and their behaviour is often questionable. It's dark but doesn't reach the quality of Dark, or even the other series I mentioned.

Imagineering?
A documentary about a fascinating venture inside MIT: an attempt to design and build the way the natural world does, discarding plastics, metals, and the concept of the assembly line along the way. That's really, really interesting if you ask me, but we don't get to see how much progress is actually being made. Instead, this documentary spends most of its time presenting a beautiful person floating through the world, immaculately dressed and made up, beautiful hair in abundance, while motivational platitudes fall effortlessly to the ground. Her project team pop up now and again, also beautiful, as does a couple of amazing projects (involving silk worms and bees), but the story is never completed, we're always left with a couple of questions: Did I miss something? So what happened next? And even: Is this for real or is it some sort of scam? All of the people featured here must be incredibly talented, but the film maker seems to have taken the wrong path.
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Gruesome, very good in parts but incredibly frustrating overall.
It feels very slow, but when the action happens, it's quick, brutal and exciting. The script sounds like a Tarantino, or a strong attempt at it, which doesn't always work and it doesn't always make sense why the things that happened, happened. There are a couple of red herrings to stop things being predictable, which the film never is. A couple of the characters are likeable (including Kurt Russell's), but frankly most of the rest are irritating. The baddies are very frightening indeed and the film does very well by hinting at the horrors of their world. I enjoyed it but have no desire to watch it again.
