The Dark Side (2015)
Romantic Comedy/Documentary shot in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy
This is a provocative story about a man who accidentally butt-dials his ex-girlfriend a few days after Hurricane Sandy and takes it as a sign that he should be back in touch with her (the ex-girlfriend's name is also Sandy). The film crosses genres in a disturbing way. On the one hand we are confronted by actual footage taken by firefighters as homes were lost to one of the most devastating fires in New York history. At the same time, we get to see the sweet story unfold as the main characters re-kindle and old romance. It's disturbing to see the trauma and ruin that resulted from the Hurricane mixed with the lightness of the love story, but in this way I found the film to be quite brilliant...It forced me to think about the lines between the day-to- day joys and struggles of my own relationships and how they intersect in my emotional space with larger and more complex current events, especially climate change.
When Do We Eat? (2005)
Great Movie
Rent it soon! We laughed and cried and thought a lot about this poignant film when it was over. Please rent it if you care about Jewish culture or family dynamics. Rent it even if you don't. Support independent film-making. Acting was great. Story was great. Direction was great. Film-making at its finest. Share it with your friends as a holiday gift so they won't think their own family is the most dysfunctional they have ever known. This film was a clever mix of Torah and storytelling, neurosis and madness. If you haven't been to a crazy Seder, this is your chance. If you haven't been to any Seder, this is your chance.
