Barbarian (2022)
Did I watch a different movie than the negative reviewers?
I'm not sure what people are confused by. This movie was very straight forward and there really isn't that much up for imagination.
It's a great monster/creeper flick. Definitely didn't know what to expect with such mixed reviews, but it's really that simple.
First act was a little slow and also had some sprinkled in red herrings which really helped the second and third act to become that much more shocking.
The interactions with police were so spot on, the interactions with men, so spot on. Just an all around good creepy movie with even a bit of dark humor sprinkled in.
It feels as though some movie goers find a desperate need to understand side plot points that are entirely uneccesary for the actual film.
Uncharted (2022)
Couldn't get past marky mark as sully
What a terrible casting choice. I was honestly extremely skeptical about this production because I love this game franchise, but I was pleasantly surprised by almost every actor, except mark Wahlberg. He wasn't even close to playing a decent Sully and every time he was on the screen it completely ruined the emersion.
Did someone lose a bet and have to include him in the project? Make him the brother, make him the villain, he could have done so many other roles but they gave him Sully? Such a poor choice and genuinely ruined the film.
If folks can get past a borderline offensive portrayal of one of the most important characters in the franchise, it's not a bad flick. To me it was just another slap in the face of a media company doing the bare minimum to make a quick buck off the back of an already successful franchise.
South Park: Hummels & Heroin (2017)
worse south park episode in a while
This is by far the worst episode I've seen in a while, it was pretty disappointing. The social commentary falls pretty flat, despite the relevance of the opioid crisis, and Josh Gad's character was a waste of talent. I don't really know what else to say without spoiling anything, but this episode felt very hollow and didn't really have a point worth acknowledging.
The Quiet Earth (1985)
A hidden gem
I watched this movie for the first time in 2012 and it promptly became my favorite movie of all time. It starts with a man waking into the world alone. It explores themes of existential questioning, rebirth, and love/betrayal. By the end of the movie, this film leaves you questioning these very things but in your own vastly populated world. I'm a huge movie fan and it's rare I ever get to discover a movie that stops me in my tracks. There is just no movie I can compare this to, except maybe Moon, or Silent Running, just in that they make you question the futility of existence and happen to be in the sci-fi genre. I cannot recommend this film enough, there's nothing like it.
