The Dark Knight (2008)
One of few perfect movies
When i first watched this movie, i liked it, but i didn't really get why people are so obssesed with it. I liked the visuals, the soundtrack, i obviously admired Heath Ledger's performance, but by no means did i love this movie. However, after a rewatch, several years later, i came to realize that this is one of the greatest movies of all time.
The plot of this movie is incredible, it had me gripped from the first scene to the very last. The writing, while having a few plot holes and plot conveniences, was incredibly entertaining and engaging, and i honestly wouldn't change a thing about it.
As far as visuals and cinematography go, this movie is Oscar worthy. Everything looks so good, and most importantly, so real, which is unusual for a superhero movie. Most of the superhero movies i have watched are really kin on reminding you that after all, you are only watching a movie. It's really hard to get rid of that feeling, as most of them are so unrealistic. But this is different with The Dark Knight, and this has a lot to do with the amazing visual style and direction of Christopher Nolan. From the joker himself, to Gotham's outlook, the technologies they use, this movie doesn't lose its sense of realism, and honestly, the plot is so good you will probably be too invested to lose your connection to the movie.
Now, that all that is wrapped up, let's talk about Heath Ledger. But is there anything left to say? Dark, disturbingly realistic, the Joker isn't just a character, he is an idea, and the way he stands at the center of the movie's central theme, the fight for the soul of Gohtam city, just makes his character one of the most memorable in history, and his performance as one of the finest in cinematic history. But let's not forget the amazing work that has been put in this movie by all the cast. Gary Oldman, Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, they all do a fantastic job, and it's a shame they have to live in the eternal shadow of Heath Ledger.
In conclusion, this movie is one of my favourite movies of all time. The acting, the plot, the visuals, the direction, the writing, the message, the themes. There is nothing i would change, and that is a statement i can make about only a few other movies.
Barry Lyndon (1975)
Truely one of the most beautiful movies i have ever seen
As far as cinematography, production-design, costumes, make-up and hairstyling go, this movie is my favourite of all time. All the stills are gorgeous, every scene is beautifully lit( especially those lit only by candle light), and overall, this movie doesn't seem like a commercial movie, created by a studio in order to obtain profit from it, but it much rather strikes me as a carefuly crafted and drawn motion picture from one of the greatest artists who has ever lived, and my personal favourite film-maker of all time, Stanley Kubrick!
This might actually be my second favourite Kubrick movie of all time, after 2001: a space oddysey. And while that movie is widely remembered and discussed about to this day, it really is a shame people don't remember this movie as well as they do other Kubrick masterpieces, such as 2001, The shining, or A clockwork orange. On one hand I get it, this movie isn't as compelling as the others, the deeper meaning isn't really there, and overall its message simply doesn't present the same level of complexity as the aforementioned movies. Those are perhaps some of the reasons why I am giving this movie a 9/10, and not a 10/10, but overall I just love this movie, and i wish it got more recognition.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
Well...
What did i just watch? Like seriously this movie is the most low budget, pathetic, most nonsense and unpretentious movie i have ever watched. However, these are perhaps the reasons why it has become so popular. This movie doesn't want to be taken seriously, and that's exactly what you should do when you watch it. Prepare yourself for an objectively poor low-budget comedy, not for a cinematic masterpiece. You are going in to watch this movie in order to have a good time and enjoy the incredibly original and hilarious comedic moments. This is a comedy in the purest sense of the word, and it it supposed to be that way. That is what makes it special, the sheer joy you get by watching nonsense moments happen in a nonsense cinematic universe. This movie isn't great, it doesn't have great acting, great cinematography, a great message, or a great story. But it is so fun, so enjoyable, so idiotic, that you are gonna find yourself loving this movie. Now i am giving this 8/10 rating on account that this movie lacks a lot in cinematic quality and aspects that make a movie great, but in its own special way, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a classic, and perhaps the best comedy i have ever watched.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
This movie is perfect but for one thing
This movie is incredible. The direction, the screenplay, the dialogue and the performances by the main actors really make this a special movie. However its main strong point is obviously the character of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, played impecabilly by Anthony Hopkins. Unfortunately, in my mind, the quality of the scenes where Hannibal Lecter is present really make all the other scenes of the movie( or at least most of them) seem bad by comparisson. If Lecter would have had just a little more screen time, this movie would have been pretty much flawless. This movie's greatest weakness is not entirely playing to its strengths. Nevertheless this is an amazing movie by any possible margin.
The Green Mile (1999)
Amazing movie
This movie is truely great. Incredibly emotional, this is the definition of an emotional roller coaster. It is a comedy, but it is also a drama. A fantasy, but also a tragedy. It is impossible to lock this movie down to a genre, and that's what makes it better, and arguably the best movie of 1999, ahead of Fight Club and Matrix.
Despite its incredibly original theme and message, the green mile also has an amazing cast, with Tom Hanks playing one of his more underrated roles, while Michael Clarke Duncan reaches the height of his career playing the massive, but kind and gentle John Coffey, a character with an incredible story and who truly is the beating heart of the movie.
There are some issues that i have with this movie, mainly the run time, which feels extremly long, and also the character of Percy. Like the very existence of this character, who doesn't serve much of a purpose in a logical sense, and seems to only be there to bump up the movie's running time.
With that being said, the green mile is still an incredibly well made movie, and it gets a 9/10 from me
Up (2009)
Best animated movie i have watched
I never thought an animated movie could deserve a 9 rating. Not because animated movies are inheritly bad, however, when put head to head with an artistic movie, most animated features just can't quite hold their own. That's what i thought until i came upon "Up". The message of this movie is so strong, so true, so pinpoint. It is also so funny, the direction is amazing. Everything about this movie is amazing, and I can't wait to watch it again.
The Tudors: Destiny and Fortune (2008)
Best episode so far
Having watched the first 2 seasons of the series, i can safely say this has been the best episode so far. The amazing acting from natalie dormer, brilliant directing, perfectly emphasizing all the defining traits of the main characters, and of course, the just, but somewhat heartbreaking conclusion to what has been the main plot of the show for the second season, and the second half of the first season
Vikings (2013)
Good show
If you like good acting, epic visual and audio effects and medieval battles, than vikings is the show for you. The first 3 seasons also have amazing writing. The quality kind of drops in season 4, and while there are a few episodes throughout seasons 4, 5 and especially 6 that are incredibly good, the consistency in quality is down from the first three seasons.
Vikings: The Last Act (2020)
Only one problem with this ending
Ingrid as queen of kattegat? REALLY?!?! Is that the best they could do? Instead of having Hvitserk or even Ubbe return and rule they made a character with like what, 10 appearances in the ENTIRE show become queen? Come on writers, you are better than this
Goodfellas (1990)
Amazing movie
Goodfellas is the perfect mix of a really great movie, with very few flaws and great acting, details and storytelling, and a really entertaining and enjoyable movie, easily watchable by most people
Norsemen (2016)
Worst show ever
I have seen many awful shows, but this has to be the worst ever. The acting is awful, the plot is horrible, I honestly can't find a thing that I actually liked in this show. I cringed out every 5 minutes, this portrayal of vikings is unbelievably inaccurate and cringe. Don't watch this show, you will masively regret it
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
Brilliant
It may be over 3 hours long, the characters may have little depth, and the ending may be predictable, but every time I watch it, I am impressed. This is simply one of the greatest films ever, and it's all because of the plot. Filled with brilliant moments, I have never watched a movie with that much interest. It's simply brilliant. Brilliantly shot, brilliant battles, every scene is important in its own way. The characters are easy to love, and it's easy for us to understand why this masterpiece has won 11 academy awards. I am not even going to talk about the music, the perfect brightness, the incredible setting and special effects. Film critics will say it's not the same level with the godfather 2, or citizen kane, or casablanca, or God knows what other old film, but for me, and most of the people I know, this is the best, most entertaining film, if not necessarily the greatest.
Schindler's List (1993)
One of the best
Everything about this film is great. The acting is brilliant, the story very detailed and catchy, every scene is so well shot and edited. Two things stand out for me though. Firstly, the characters. Oskar Schindler and Amon Goeth aren't only brilliantly presented in antithesis, and incredibly well created and featured. They are so much more than that. They both are complex and complete characters and human beings, and although one is essentially the hero, and the other one the bad guy, their complexity and character presentation in one of the darkest periods of human history is absolutely top-notch. Secondly, the ending. It was so brilliant in every way possible. It was heartbreaking, but at the same time when you saw all the jews walking and singing and amon goeth being hanged you just got a sence of happiness and justice. This is without a doubt one of the greates movie ever, and, for me i would go as far as saying this is my favourite movie of all time, maybe alongside the lord of the rings trilogy
