The Wheel of Time (2021)
Proof that CGI can't save terrible acting
Like most folk I went into this hoping this was Amazon's answer to GOT. It's not.
The story is very confusing and there's moments of "eh how did that just happen?" or "How did so and so know that?". Despite being set in a fantasy world it's also quite a drawn out boring story too. The first episode is a total drag until a random battle suddenly appears.
The action sequences are utterly confusing and not enjoyable as they always use the technique of flashing the camera around and changing the shots really quickly so you lose your orientation. It just hurts your head after a while.
But the single worst point of the show is the acting. It's absolutely awful. Never once does it ever seem real. It just feels like a school play - laughably unconvincing.
We couldn't watch it to the end of the season. The acting was just too shocking and the story too boring.
Apparently it cost Amazon $80 Million to make this. Can't help but think they should have channelled an extra $50 to send each of the cast to acting school for another two weeks.
The Grand Tour: The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown (2021)
A bit of a chore
Up until this episode I've enjoyed the Grand Tour specials but this one was pretty hard work.
We know it's all staged but this episode seemed worse than the others - the bit with the fire engine was painful. Are we expected to believe there was a parked fire engine nearby unattended that they could freely use?
It was also really disjointed and the bridge part at the end was pointless.
Marcella (2016)
First two seasons okay but season three is terrible
Didn't mind the first two seasons. A bit of a cliché that she's a so-called brilliant detective that has mental health issues. They always do don't they?
However season 3 is just terrible and utterly stupid. We're expected to believe that this mafia like family that runs entire towns consists of just a couple of guys and one henchmen? And that their mansion is literally unguarded?
And then there's the parts of the story that just get forgotten about. My favourite being the mayor who gets murdered (we think) but nothing is ever said about it by the family or the police.
Then there's the absolute stupid parts where Marcella has black-outs and stalks herself(?)...but no one notices she gone despite being monitored. And how she leaves herself some music of her a tune she associates herself with but can't play an instrument. Or, my favourite, how she has a mystery black-out and finds time to perfectly dye her hair a different colour.
The ending couldn't come soon enough...and it was just as stupid. Everyone got shot, Marcella didn't care, stole a baby, stole a load of money, chartered a private plane and flew off into the distance.
Absolutely terrible plot from start to finish.
Greenland (2020)
Standard but entertaining disaster movie
Nothing really new here but still it's done pretty well. The feeling of panic is handled pretty well.
That said I was amazed by how easily the main characters can get to the front of a angry mob!
All-in-all it's none-stop for 2 hours as one horrendous event leads to the next and a good way to take your mind off coronavirus for a bit.
Derry Girls (2018)
A brilliant comedy
Watched this with my girlfriend who usually finds any sitcom unfunny. However she loved this as did I - to the point we're watching it again from the start but with subtitles on!
Very, very funny and acted superbly. A bonus if you grew up in the 90's too as the soundtrack is great.
The Wrong Missy (2020)
Predictable but actually very funny
I guess this kind of film gets a lot of negative reviews because it's not deep or intellectual and doesn't last 4.5 hours.
What it is is a rather silly comedy that's predictable but a blast to watch. Like comedies used to be. I laughed out loud on a number of occasions - as did my girlfriend as she never usually laughs at these kind of films.
Lauren Lapkus is superb in it - brilliant comedy acting.
So if you want something easy to watch, a simple plot and packed full of silly (but funny) jokes then I'd 100% recommend this.
Devs (2020)
Nerdy entertainment ruined by lead character
Loved the nerdy idea of this show - it was something different. Even my girlfriend who doesn't like tech or Sci-Fi was gripped by it.
Sadly the entire series was ruined by Lilly. Her acting is awful and so annoyingly dull. She's so unconvincing as an actress that I found myself wishing her scenes away. Which is a shame as the scenes without her are great and the rest of the actors are fine.
