Original min series with disaster ratings.
30 October 2006
Blackout had a complete blackout with Germanys audience, when premiered in its prime-time slot on a Sunday eve. Was the first 90 min. Part 1 too complex? Too brutal? Not really I say. Complexity wise, Blackout can hold up with the Criminal Minds and the Navy CIS anytime. Brutal? Yes the miniseries is defiantly hard in the pictures Director Keglevic used, but brutal is usually good for the ratings. (Police man is killing other policeman directly without remorse. Junkies giving head in porn theaters and so on.) The consequence will be undoubted that German audiences will see less of such original programming. The networks will go back into buying US Standards at the various film markets. Its less expensive, less risk taking. For the audience there is thankfully the DVD Market. Yes Blackout is fiction, but it could be true. Go and see Blackout, if you like a hard realistic look at today's Police work.

Too long - mind you mind spoiler
11 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
The film is too long. It's a roller-coaster of a thousand things happening, all well done, in every department, but it is hard to sit through the 150 minutes. (In Germany most cinemas show the film with a intermission.) I can't wait to see the DVD with another xxx numbers of deleted scenes or even a longer directors cut. Imagine you see the film without the comic situation almost slapstick wise, island sequence in the beginning. Where Capatain Jack escapes the cannibals. Take this sequence out, alt least some 20 Minutes I guess - and you get a much tighter film to begin with. It appears that the film has too many elements in it, and the director "can't kill his darlings". So what's the third part going to be like? Another 2 1/2 hours long? I hope not, otherwise the film is absolutely entertaining.
