Obsession (2023)
1/10
I lasted 18 minutes into episode 1...
29 April 2024
... but my mind started wandering the second Charlie Murphy walked onto the screen. I thought 'Are you kidding me? SHE'S supposed to be the Julliette Binoche character from the brilliant Louis Malle film, Damage?!' Binoche's Anna was an alluring and unobtainable bottomless mystery, full of forbidden danger, her amazing body always dressed to kill - the kind of perfection that never has to try and never has to chase down any man she wants - Meanwhile, Murphy's Anna is just... nothing special. Not on any level. She looks like a million crop-topped, gum-chomping chicks in the neighborhood. This girl doesn't draw men, SHE deserately stalks them. Yet, for reasons nobody watching can wrap their heads around, Armitage's William is immediately, utterly fascinated by... what, exactly? I have seen amazing men fall hard for seemingly ordinary women but "seemingly" is the key. Once you know them you "get" it. They always turn out to have some indefinable thing that sets them apart. I only needed 18 minutes to grasp that that was clearly not the case with Obsession.

If you want to see a brilliantly done tale of obsession, get your hands on Malle's DAMAGE. It's a slow burn and everyone in it is BELIEVABLE. Speaking of...

I honestly couldn't stick around after laughing at Armitage making sweet cow eyes at Murphy (again, about 18 minutes in... Most decdedly NOT a slow burn. Gawd!). But, it seemed everybody else in the cast was doing their job, pulling their weight - and I've always found Indira Varma to be a bright spot in everything in which I've seen her. But, I'm sorry. Armitage and Murphy were just too weird together.

Seriously, WTF, Richard Armitage?! Don't ever take a part again without a clear idea of what you're gettng yourself into. I'll forgive you, just this once - but not again.

Did we see the same show?

I thought it was brilliant and am kind of going through withdrawal now that it's over. I HOPE there's more and that people who have not read the books check it out. Apparently, having done so kills one's ability to appreciate the excellence of this story and this production. More, please.

Yeah, but...

... What happened to the dog?! A fun story if you don't look to close because there are a lot of holes throughout.
