The Shield: Postpartum (2006)
The best televised drama period
I will dispense with bombast or unnecessary effusive superlatives and simply state that to this day, never has a televised program of any genre captivated me to this extent. The Shield is one of those shows that we will still discuss decades from now, and use as a de rigeur benchmark to categorize and qualify anything even remotely similar. From the pilot episode, to the gut wrenching season five quasi-finale, the writing, its characters and genius story lines will engross you like nothing else on the tube. Hats off to Shawn Ryan for making the idiot box, less idiotic, and pulling together a near perfect ensemble of brilliant actors. There is no one I would change, from the merest walk on and extra, to the key cast. If Walter Goggins, Jay Karnes & David Rees Snell would all retire to live as hermits on the Aelutian islands, never to apear in public again, their record as actors would still surpass that of 98% of their peers just for their stint on The Shield. I sincerely hope that there are more seasons than five, 12 to 15 should do it, then again maybe not.
