Left Behind (2000)
High hopes didn't pan out
After reading the outstanding first book of the Left Behind series, I had high hopes for the movie production. I was disappointed however in the way that the story was told. I thought the character representations were a little off, with the exception of Rayford and Hattie. While I enjoyed Kirk Cameron's performance, I do not think he fit the role of Buck. I also do not think the movie developed his character as well as it should have. The book was difficult for me to put down. However, after having such high hopes for the movie, I found myself asleep before its conclusion. Don't let this keep you from seeing the movie though - it's worthy of your time. I voted 4/10.
Wonder Boys (2000)
Enjoyable.
I must admit that I rented this movie because I like to watch a Michael Douglas performance. However, this movie, while starting out slow, captivated my interest. I was impressed with the story and how well the actors portrayed their characters. The direction was also very high quality. Have patience at the beginning...the movie does start out slow. If you give it time, though, it unfolds into a fascinating, unique, and sometimes hilarious story. I voted 8/10 for this enjoyable film.
Titanic (1997)
A sad case of the Oscar Epic bug.
Forget all the hype. Forget that since this tradegy happened, it has been America's most popular story. If you strip all the attention surrounding this movie away, you're left with a big-budget film that is just that - big-budget. The film overwhelms itself with a ridiculous amount of foreshadowing. The acting is nothing to be accoladed. I wasn't even impressed with the magnificent Kathy Bates' performance. The costumes, special effects, and soundtrack were all good points in the film, however I do not like the fact that the Academy awarded this film so heavily. It was simply an overhyped epic, not a film worthy of 11 of Hollywood's most prestigious award. James Cameron's ego-driven direction really spoils this movie. I would recommend seeing this movie just because it IS the tragedy of the century, but don't fall into the trap of thinking this is a quality piece of filmmaking. I voted 5/10.
In & Out (1997)
in context
I think this film in its context is creative and funny. The premise is not impossible, but not likely - I don't think Howard's denial would run so deep as to literally convince him that he was straight. But aside from the unlikely plot, the movie is entertaining and the acting is good. If nothing else, see this movie to see Joan Cusack freak out and Tom Selleck give a kiss. I voted 6/10.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Quite a film
This is quite a story, and the film does an incredible job of telling it. The acting is magnificent, and the quality of the direction makes this film a pleasure to watch. A great film for the human spirit, and the importance of freedom to our well-being. I voted 10/10 for Shawshank.
How the West Was Fun (1994)
Oh please...
Give the parents a break...this movie is sad moviemaking. If the Olsen twins had stayed young, maybe they would have more success on the silver screen. However, as they get older their acting skills continue to show that looks is all they have. And please save us from the acting on the adult's parts. They were obviously as bored as I was. I voted 1/10.
Schindler's List (1993)
Masterpiece
Put your preconceptions about the director aside. Clear your mind of Hollywood prototypes and what could and should be added to this film. Just enjoy this masterpiece as a thematic work of art in which the acting is superb, the time period represented is real, and the story is a blend of sorrow, shame, and awe. This is the only movie that overcame my emotions, resulting in tears. It will leave you spellbound with its haunting soundtrack and black and white canvass. This movie is truly a masterpiece of filmmaking, and whether or not you liked it, it should be respected. I voted 10/10.
Steel Magnolias (1989)
The tagline is perfect.
The tagline of this movie truly describes it accurately. The movie is hilarious, and yet it is such a great demonstration of talent as well. Can you imagine if this cast was in one movie together today? That would be one incredible ensemble. This movie should be viewed for Sally Field's performance towards the end of the movie - truly one of the best pieces of acting I've ever seen. And who can forget Shirly MacLaine's hilarious performance? This is not a prestigious film, it is just a fine piece of entertainment that does not try to live up to Hollywood norms. It's highly enjoyable, and a great testament to dramatic comedy. I voted 9/10.
