Cang Lan jue (2022)
amazing worldbuilding
I absolutely loved the worldbuilding in these series: the various realms were amazing and very detailed. The actors were great and played their respective roles convincingly.
However, after about 10 episodes the characters and the storyline changed. I liked the Moon Supreme character before he got back his feelings. He was in control of the situation, had clear goals and knew how to achieve them. After he got back his feelings, he turned wishy-washy and inconsistent. "I need to kill the Orchid, find the fragments of the special sword and bring them to me". The fragments are brought. "No, I don't want to kill the Orchid, throw the fragments away". This is just one example of inconsistency, but this continues throughout the rest of the show.
At one time Moon Supreme is enduring a torture, and we are told he will suffer every night. We see him suffering the first night, then in the following nights he is in completely healthy condition, no signs of suffering any sort.
Moon Supreme promises to find a different way to bring the petrified soldiers back home, aside from killing the Orchid, yet we don't see him researching in books or in scriptures.
While the series is based on a book, I haven't read it, so I can't say whether it's a faithful adaptation or not.
Overall. It's a great romance show with great worldbuilding.
Knights of the Zodiac (2023)
just: bad!
When this title came up as top 10 movies, I thought maybe I should give this a try, specially the short synopsis seemed interesting. However there was a sneaking suspicion looming that this might turn into something like "2 hours of my life wasted, and I will never get it back".
At least with this one only about 25 minutes were wasted. And what made me to stop watching and give "thumbs down"?
The "Goddess Athena". The "Goddess Athena" in this movie is a blonde girl with blue eyes, a blonde with blue eyes...
Apparently, this movie is based on a manga and anime series, and everyone is complaining how they butchered the plot and the storyline and the character development.
Me? I refuse to watch something so superficial with blonde, blue eyed "goddess".
Tian sheng chang ge (2018)
if only it was consistent
I will have to agree with some of the other reviewers: the show goes on pretty consistent for about 52 or so episodes, and after that everything seems to change!
Nothing happens for 5 or 6 episodes, the characters keep repeating themselves over and over.
New characters appear, some of them were thought long to be dead: only to be killed after about 10 episodes. Entire plotlines and schemes are planned, only to be gone in smoke leaving no trace whatsoever.
Generally, it seems the main writers were on vacation after episode 52 or so, then had to come back and do damage control for the last 6 episodes by killing all newly appeared characters.
We had to watch 76 episodes, we deserved a happy, satisfying ending: no such luck!
The actors are great, the settings were perfect, just the writers spoiled the great show midway.
Kingdom (2012)
Great show for history lovers
I would definitely recommend this show to everyone interested in China's Warring States period, as well as anyone who loves history (which would be me). Both manga and the show are very good, the manga author has done a great deal of research in history, and that historic research and detail is shown in anime as well.
With all it's historic seriousness, the main hero's clumsiness was like a comical relief to me and I kept laughing at his antics.
Just like the other reviewers mentioned, the animation itself needs a lot of improvement in the beginning: some reviewers mention mistakes in season 1 only, I noticed some very glaring animation errors in season 2. But I am willing to forgive the poor early animation, since the storyline and voice acting are excellent.
One reviewer was complaining about bad English dubbing.
I watch anime in sub only and the VA's are excellent, my favorites are Masakazu Morita and Hosoya Yoshimasa in this show.
Please give this show a try: you won't be disappointed. While you are at it, read the manga as well!
Shadow and Bone (2021)
ruined by Netflix
I decided to give the show a try after finishing the books.
Two minutes into the the show, and I am going: "This is bad, this is really, really bad!"
Where do I even start???
First and foremost is the tone the actors speak: it's like they are on a theater stage reciting some very dramatic poem! Why the dramatic tone? Why so pompous?? Can't they speak normally?? Even the soundtrack is unnecessarily pompous!
Whose "bright" idea was to "join" the two independent storylines? The plotline is weak, inconsistent and not convincing
Also, the chosen actors aren't even close to the descriptions in the books. My favorite character from the entire Grishaverse universe is Kaz. The actor portraying him does NOT look like him, sound like him or act like him!
