Prey (2022)
Mediocre low-budget spinoff
This doesnt feel like a real film. It's more like Star asked a production company "What can you with 1/20th of the average budget for a film like this?" and they came back with something even cheaper than that. The solution: a bunch of people running around in the woods, getting picked off by the predator. Having it take place in a pre-modern civilization means they also saved a ton of money on sets and props. And why isnt it called something like "Predator 5"? Probably because they could save even more money by not having 'Predator' in the title.
The writing and the story is actually good for such a niche film, but it's not enough to wash the overall cheapness of watching 'prey' from your mouth.
Suicide Squad (2016)
This film should never have been released.
Suicide Squad is a brilliant example of a failed film. The story makes no sense at all, the characters make no sense and the whole experience just leaves you asking how a film can go this wrong and still get released. It seems like several different scripts were filmed, then edited together into three or four different films that were then chopped down and put into a single, confusing film. Some plot points are set up, but never resolved. While other scenes in the film seem to be the resolution of a plot point whose setup was left out of the film. And it's not, as one critic hypothesizes, that this is the results of comic book writers let loose in the movie business. Im a longtime DC comics reader and this film was every bit the confusing mess to me, as it was for casual moviegoers.
The Good Dinosaur (2015)
Pixar's least interesting film to date
This film suffers from an overwhelming lack of imagination and originality. It feels like it was intentionally constructed entirely from the most worn-out, tired, uninspiring tropes of children's cinema in an effort to perhaps maximize appeal. But the result is just a film that is boring to both children and adults.
The film is built around three core tropes: 1)unlikely friendship 2)coming of age 3)power of family. Neither of these three is done in a way that is the least bit interesting.
1) is the main theme and deals with how the Dinosaur Arlo befriends and learns how to work together with the human Spot in order to successfully complete his journey to trope 2 and 3. 2) deals with how Arlo is the runt of the litter and how he must go through a journey of trials to reach maturity and be a useful member of the family 3) is the usual American cliché of the perfect, idyllic family unit where no obstacle cannot be overcome by paternal love and sticking to conservative moral values. It even has an awful scene in which Arlo gets a motivational talk from the ghost of his dead father.
Perhaps Pixar should consider not working with this team of scriptwriters anymore, since they seem incapable for crafting a story that's worthy of the privilege of being made into a animated film by the awesome artists at Pixar.
Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1 (2013)
Gloriously stupid!
There are a lot of bad films out there, but this is most definitely one of them. Every single tacky, stupid, unconvincing, over-the-top detail in it is there because it's supposed to and it fills a purpose. This is a film made by people who love intentionally films, for other like-minded people to enjoy and get a kick out of. You don't need to be a Troma fan like me to love this movie, but you do need to have a goddamn sense of humor. It's a wonderfully tasteless mix of silliness, violence, provocation and gallons of sticky fluids. And too boot, it's not shot on cheap digital video, it's all gorgeous looking film. It's obvious that this didn't have the budget of Tromas crowning achievement 'Poultrygeist' from 2006, but it's nevertheless a must for every single human being on the planet... and a couple of the other mammals too.
Frozen (2013)
Enjoyable, but not for everyone.
With Frozen, it is obvious that Disney has gone back to the template that made "Beauty and the beast" a smash hit. Unlike most other animated films of the past decade, Frozen leaves behind visual spectacles and wacky comedy, in order to focus on making a romantic film aimed at a young female audience. It's a film about love, friendship and singing catchy tunes. This is the kind of film that, if you were planning an evening at the cinema with your family, you might want to let your husband and sons watch something else. They might enjoy it, but the odds are against it. Technically, the film is flawlessly animated and put together but without breaking any new ground in terms of visuals. But then again, Disney knows that their targeted audience is not really interested in that.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
One of the most overrated films of all time
The Shawshank Redemption is an excellent example of Hollywood craftsmanship. It has believable acting, excellent pacing, good cinematography and tells the story in a very effective manner. But it is film as a craft, not as an art.
To put this film in the same category as those of Kubrick, Kurosawa, Truffaut or Bergman is like comparing a piece of quality furniture to a Picasso.
I doubt even one in a hundred people, who hold this film in such high regard as to vote it #2, could actually name the director if you asked them in the street.
