This is a terrific B-movie
This film has the misfortune of being buried by Dimension Pictures, which would apparently rather spend tons of money publicizing terrible Kevin Williamson films. This is a really creepy and tense haunted sub flick, one that doesn't take any easy way out and has an interesting perspective on the moral responsibility of the crew. David Twohy did a pretty good job directing Pitch Black, but he does an incredible job here. He fully exploits the 'ghost story on a submarine' plot, with the setting being a tense environment even in films like The Hunt For Red October. There's also one incredible subtle moment that (SPOILER) indicates the demise of most of the crew. You'll know it when you see it. Check this one out, it's far from 'weak' as has been described.
Club Fed (1990)
Better than an unanesthetized root canal
But not much. First off, this film is many things. It IS badly-acted, and Burt Young looks like he'd rather be anywhere else. It IS not funny. It IS not a satire or a Bergman-esque like examination of the treatment of white-collar criminals. You want to see a good satire? Go rent Dr. Strangelove or Network or even Starship Troopers. Club Fed is just a crappy comedy with a posse of washed-up TV stars and character actors, all of whom have a look on their face that says "Please don't let anyone see this movie" It's amazing that a film like this can even get financed when something like Memento can barely find a distributor.
The Night of the Hunter (1955)
What are you going to do, believe me or the guy who likes Kindergarten Cop?
ME of course. Look, I've seen a few negative comments on this film, ranging from "I don't get it!" (self-explanatory) to "It doesn't deserve its reputation (sure, whatever, go back to your Kenny G records). This is simply a one of a kind masterpiece, that's all there is to it. If you don't like it, your loss. The film remains a genuine American classic: thrilling, spooky, surreal, weirdly funny, and mesmerizing. It's like the darkest fairytale ever committed to the screen, and I call it a "fairytale" because it's mostly told from the children's P.O.V., and the story is stylized like a long-ago memory played out through a nightmare. It's a tragedy that Charles Laughton didn't direct another film, but he directed this one and that's more quality in one film than most directors can hope to come near in an entire career. And, by the way, Robert Mitchum gives one of the best performances you'll ever see in this film. Don't miss this one. By the way, ignore the bloke who says to "rent Cape Fear instead". For the love of God, you know he's talking about the inferior remake, don't listen to him!
